The Senior Director of Process Excellence will manage the strategic and day-to-day functions of a global team of skilled professionals in two related process-based disciplines. The first is Continuous Improvement (CI) which will be engaged in projects driving capability improvements across all the functions of Global Services. These improvements can be targeted at the improvement of any valuable outcome to GS such as the improvement of customer experience, quality of service delivery, or cost efficiencies. This team leverages the Lean Six Sigma methodology and generally will consist of resources certified at the Black Belt level.
The second discipline within Process Excellence is Process Intelligence (PI) which leverages advanced analytical capabilities such as Process Mining and Task Mining, both of which provide deep insights regarding process variation, bottlenecks, lead times, and other key metrics. This discipline also leverages Lean Six Sigma but utilizes advanced analytics to accelerate insights and drive improvements. The current technology standard for PI is Celonis – although this role will be responsible for setting the strategy around the right technology to leverage into the future.
The Sr Director, Process Excellence role is also accountable for driving a culture of Continuous Improvement across all the functions of Global Services. CI is one of the core competencies that the leadership team of GS would like to see embedded in how the operational teams approach their work on a day to day basis.
This role is generally held accountable to deliver measurable and sustainable value to Global Services every year and to that end, this role will maintain a robust portfolio management process to ensure control over all of the projects and that the total value of the project portfolio can be projected and measured once realized.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for the development of the short, mid, and long-term strategies of the Process Excellence capability within Global Services. These strategies will support the long term objectives of Global Services.
- Responsible for ensuring that the Process Excellence team is appropriately resourced and funded in order to deliver on its objectives.
- The role will be directly engaged in some of the larger and most impactful projects in the portfolio generally through direct sponsorship and participation on Steering Committees or similar forums.
- As required by the needs of the projects, deeper engagement may be required to keep projects on track, remove obstacles, or provide direct input regarding future state designs.
- The role will also directly engage in the early “Phase 0” or “Discovery” phases of key projects to ensure that the project is scoped/shaped appropriately to deliver the greatest return for GS and J&J.
- Given the scale of some key projects, the role will actively engage with leaders of other key capabilities (eg, Project Management) or other functions (eg, HR) to ensure alignment of objecives and tactics at all times.
- Responsible for managing the PE portfolio including:
- Providing data for all SCS or GS reporting needs such as Monthly/Quarterly Business Reviews
- Ability to provide quantified value data – either forward-looking projections for current or future years and backward-looking actuals for completed projects.
- Accurate status reporting regarding all active projects
- Responsible to execute development plans for all resources on the PE team. Most resources will join the team with extensive process-based skillsets but the work of the PE provides a great opportunity for every member of the team to develop additional skills in leadership, change management, advanced technologies such as AI, and gain exposure to new J&J functional areas.
- Responsible for the continued evolution of the team, ensuring that resources can not only deliver on the current project portfolio but also has the skills to deliver on the projects of the future.
- Perform other work related duties as assigned including staff meetings, training, etc.
Qualifications
- A minimum of 12+ years of Process Excellence experience is required. This experience can include general process-based experience such as Process Ownership, Product Ownership, Continuous Improvement leadership, Quality Improvement leadership, or similar.
- BA/BS Degree is required. Masters level degree is preferred.
- Previous people management experience is required.
- Nationally recognized and certified Lean and/or Six Sigma Green Belt is required. Black Belt or Master Black Belt is preferred.
- Experience with Process Mining and/or Task Mining is preferred but not required.
- Experience in leading, developing and managing PE programs and teams in a shared services organization: preferably HR, Finance or Procurement is preferred but not required.
- Proven track record of structured problem-solving experience, based on data analysis is required.
- Disciplined, structured and logical approach to problem solving is required.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects successfully is required.
- Proven record of delivery against deadlines and the ability to lead process change is required.
- Demonstrated ability to interact effectively and decisively with business leaders at the Functional Vice President, and Company Group Chair levels is required.
- Excellent communication skills; able to network, interface and influence at all levels of the organization, cross sector, cross-functionally and globally is required.
- Strong relationship building skills, able to influence internal and external stakeholders with shared and divergent interests, function or matrix environment is required.
