The Role
The Position

Genentech is establishing a new Campus Development Team (CDT) to oversee the implementation of the Campus Vision Plan (CVP) for the South San Francisco campus. This senior leadership position is responsible for directing two distinct and critical functions of Project Specific Financial and Schedule Portfolio Management and Project Delivery Controls for the CVP within CD. The successful candidate will provide strategic and operational leadership to optimize the execution of a large and complex portfolio of capital and expense projects. This includes managing the overall departmental budget, establishing industry best-practice project controls and business processes, and driving the analysis and implementation of optimized business systems. This role requires a high degree of leadership to influence senior management, manage cross-functional teams, and ensure that departmental initiatives align with Genentech's strategic objectives.

The Opportunity

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

The responsibilities for this position may include, but are not limited to, those listed below.

Projects Portfolio Management:

  • Oversee the project specific financial portfolio for CD

  • Responsible for managing the overall budget for CD

  • Lead the establishment of annual operational budget and resource determinations associated with budget  

  • Lead developing realistic project budgets and deliver on annual financial goals   

  • Develop monthly reporting (budget and cash flow) to demonstrate how the department is progressing against the annual budget and support project management group initiatives to meet budget 

  • Responsible for making the capital and expense submissions for the CD and CVP Long Range Plan, including annual adjustments as necessary

  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with finance functions, Campus Development Project teams and Site Services teams associated with the project prioritization process.

  • Continuously improve work processes, data management and analytics, staffing strategies, and tools to deliver on CD priorities

  • Oversee and continuously improve financial processes in support of simplification and meeting internal budget targets

  • Oversee and facilitate the credit application process for all CD projects


Projects Delivery Controls:

  • Implement and maintain industry best practices business processes for project controls required for the optimal execution and management of a large projects within a portfolio of projects

  • Accountable for documented processes and training documentation on all project controls processes

  • Accountable for carrying out project controls functions to optimize value and minimize risk on a portfolio of projects combined exceeding $6Bil

  • Accountable for delivering estimating, cost management and schedule management support to all CD projects, collaborating with group leaders and the head of CD

  • Estimating support includes industry, geographic, project category (office, laboratory, manufacturing and supporting campus facilities), and historical project benchmarking

  • Provide project specific risk management support with tools, analytics and CD and stakeholder and partner engagement

  • Develop and provide data analytics tools and support to enable project management teams to make informed and accountable decisions

  • System owner for the CD portfolio and project management and reporting tools

  • Proactively lead and manage a team of Genentech full time employees along with contingent workers depending on project workload 

  • Bringing impartiality to the project controls team’s relationship with service providers and sometimes acting as advocate for the service providers' perspective while balancing the business needs of Genentech/Roche

  • Cross functional team leadership, also via virtual communication/work channels

  • Balanced strategic and operational focus: disciplined use of the project controls and governance processes to drive strategic objectives while balancing operational demands 

  • Support or lead department or CD projects/initiatives, such as process improvements, audit management, staff development, etc.

Who you Are

Requirements:

Education, experience, knowledge and skills requirements for the Sr. Director of CD Portfolio and Project Controls position:  

  • Knowledge of PPM systems and the ability to implement and maintain systems for optimal data management and analytics support to a project management organization

  • A high degree of proven leadership, interpersonal, negotiating, and collaborative skills plus excellent communication skills

  • Works well in a collaborative team environment and communicates effectively with customers, peers and senior/executive management

  • A thorough understanding of corporate capital processes and the organizational system requirements of corporations with large capital plans

  • Strong background in operational and project financial management

  • A thorough knowledge of best practices portfolio and project management systems and project management and controls techniques, from both an individual project and capital plan perspective

  • Knowledge of design and construction methodology, with demonstrated expertise in project and construction management

  • Experience with large development construction projects

  • Supplier relationship management experience

  • Strong commercial awareness including researching current construction industry trends, service providers’ business environment, and staying abreast of market trends and service providers’ long term strategies

  • Experience in risk management with an overall perspective of the risks inherent in a large campus developments

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, quantity surveying or equivalent

  • 10+ years’ experience in engineering, construction, project cost management and / or project management

  • 5+ years in a senior portfolio or project controls management role

This position is not eligible for relocation.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $197,500.00 - $366,900.00 USD Annual.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.  A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance.  This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
