The Role

Sr. Designer UX

About the Team

At Panera we believe that good food can bring out the best in all of us. We love the role that food plays in people’s lives, and we work hard to create interactions that elevate the experience of ordering, eating, and sharing it. We’re looking for a Senior User Experience Designer to join our team of designers, collaborators, bakers and craftspeople. We embrace vulnerability - we’re unafraid to make mistakes, own up to them, and do it differently next time. Healthy debate? Bring it on - we love it as much as we do hunting down the research and analytics we need to crack that next brilliant UX solution. Most importantly, we support each other, and we like working together.

About You

You do not have to love food, but you love the creative process, and you love collaborating. As a Senior User Experience Designer you’ll be part of a team that’s been recognized by Fast Company as one of the most innovative in the world. The Senior User Experience Designer is involved in every aspect of the design process across all our e-commerce properties: web, mobile apps, and digital experiences in retail spaces. You’ll go to the field (both online and in-person) to observe and test customers, you’ll brainstorm new innovations, you’ll craft elegant user flows and beautiful, intuitive, thoughtful interactions. You may call yourself a UX designer who can create visual designs or a visual designer who knows UX, but you are a digital craftsperson at heart.

Duties & Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of this job include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead UX projects by bringing human-centered design to the forefront of our digital solution creation process
  • Partner with designers and/or independently visualize and iterate design concepts at project-appropriate levels of fidelity
  • Scope projects, and work with product owners and other partners to build out realistic project timelines
  • Develop, conduct and analyze user research and use insights & data to help drive forward product vision
  • Facilitate qualitative research methods, i.e., workshops, interviews, card sort testing, etc.
  • Provide deliverables based on research, i.e. User Flows, Sitemaps, Wireframes, Prototypes, Lo-fi, and Hi-fi Mockups
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to acquire information about products, requirements, and to receive feedback on iterations throughout the entire process
  • Clearly organize and present designs and projects to any level of the organization
  • Break down large projects and delegate smaller tasks to team
  • Help to establish and maintain a standardized UX process for creating products based on our user research and data
  • Encourage healthy debate and facilitate conversation with recognition for the value of diversity and thought expression
  • Mentor junior designers, supporting their growth and development
  • Build relationships and trust between disciplinary teams
  • Give and solicit feedback from peers and mentors. Encourage honest feedback!

Qualifications (Education & Experience)

Qualifications include:

  • 5+ years UX Design (Web, Mobile, E-commerce) experience
  • A portfolio that demonstrates a strong understanding of UX and of beautiful, intuitive, and thoughtfully crafted interactions across desktop, tablet and mobile
  • Expertise and ability to mentor in 1 major area of the design practice (e.g. Strategy, Research, Interaction Design, Wireframing, Visual Design, etc.)
  • Comfort with Human Centered Design and Design Thinking principles
  • Comfort with ambiguity.
  • Ability to facilitate a high morale, motivating team environment
  • Experience with Agile methodology
  • Experience mentoring junior designers a plus
  • Self-starter, team-player, and an ability to work independently but fueled by collaborative environments
  • Candidates must share a portfolio of user experience and/or visual design work to be considered for the role. Please remember to share your portfolio password.

What We Do

Panera began in 1987 as St. Louis Bread Company, a humble community bakery founded with a sourdough starter from San Francisco and a dream of putting a loaf of bread in every arm. While our business has expanded well beyond St. Louis since then, that same sourdough starter is still used in our iconic sourdough bread and the craft of baking bread fresh each day remains at the heart of Panera Bread. Each day, our trained bakers fill our bakery shelves with delicious freshly baked cookies, pastries, bagels, and a range of breads from focaccia to classic baguettes.

We believe in serving delicious, freshly prepared, clean food made with carefully selected ingredients that we are proud to serve our own families. Our menu, crafted by chefs and bakers, features classic, comforting dishes, each with an intriguing twist.

We respect our planet and take measures to lessen our impacts. We believe in treating people with warmth, kindness, and respect, whether it’s a guest in our cafe or one of our associates. And we believe in helping our local communities, especially in times of need.

We’re also focused on improving quality and convenience. With investments in technology and operations, we offer omni-channel access to your Panera favorites – like mobile ordering, catering, and Rapid Pick-Up® for to-go orders, Curbside pick-up and delivery – all designed to make things easier for our guests.

Today, Panera operates as both Panera Bread® or Saint Louis Bread Co St. Louis Bread Company in 48 states, the District of Columbia and Canada.

Panera Bread is privately held by JAB Holding Company. Panera Bread is part of Panera Brands, one of the largest fast-casual restaurant platforms in the U.S., comprised of Panera Bread®, Caribou Coffee® and Einstein Bros.® Bagels.
