Job Summary

The Senior Crude Market Analyst role is pivotal in enhancing ConocoPhillips’ analytical and trading capabilities, specifically focused on US crude analytics. The analyst is responsible for producing fundamental and financial models, insights, and research reports on a daily, monthly, quarterly, and ad hoc basis. This role will combine fundamental energy market supply and demand and financial data to derive insights to identify market trends. The role will report to the Global Head of Crude Market Analysis.

Position Overview

Your responsibilities may include:

Market Analysis:

  • Build and maintain comprehensive U.S. and global oil supply and demand balances, incorporating key market drivers and regional trends to support trading and strategic decisions.
  • Analyze industry reports, production data, inventory levels, and external sources to provide market intelligence.
  • Build and enhance fair value models for futures, spreads, and other derivative products, integrating both fundamental and technical market factors.
  • Utilize vessel tracking services and shipping data to analyze flows and develop models that provide insights on global trade flows.
  • Apply machine learning techniques to improve forecasting accuracy for fundamentals and economic models, leveraging advanced data analytics to enhance predictive capabilities.
  • Work with large datasets, applying advanced statistical methods to derive actionable insights that inform trading strategies and risk management.

Trading Support:

  • Work closely with traders to provide analysis of market conditions, pricing trends, and news impacting trading positions.
  • Assess and analyze the impact of supply-demand fundamentals on price movements and market behavior.
  • Support traders in identifying opportunities based on shifts in supply-demand and recommend strategies to capitalize on these insights.
  • Ensure that models are designed for pricing, risk analysis, and scenario simulations, with smooth integration into the trading workflow.

Reporting and Communication:

  • Prepare and present daily, weekly, and monthly market reports summarizing key supply-demand trends, price outlooks, and market conditions.
  • Clearly communicate market insights and trends to senior traders and management, highlighting the potential impact of supply-demand shifts on trading positions.
  • Collaborate with other internal teams, including operations and logistics, to ensure alignment on trading decisions.

Technology & Tools:

  • Leverage advanced trading platforms, data analytics tools, and financial models to support analysis and decision-making.
  • Stay updated on emerging technologies and techniques in energy markets to improve the accuracy and efficiency of market analysis.

Ad-hoc Analysis:

  • Conduct special projects, custom reports, and scenario analysis as required by traders.
  • Participate in cross-functional projects that support the optimization of the trading process and market strategy.

Basic/Required:

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Economics, Finance, Mathematics, Engineering, other related field, or foreign equivalent
  • 3 or more years of experience in energy trading, market analysis, or related fields
  • 1 or more years of experience using trading platforms, financial analysis tools (e.g., Eikon, Bloomberg Terminal, MarketView), and data visualization tools
  • Intermediate level of knowledge of the supply and demand fundamentals in the energy markets (oil, gas, LNG, refined products, power, or renewables)

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree or higher in Economics, Finance, Mathematics, Engineering, other related field, or foreign equivalent
  • Intermediate level of proficiency with programming skills in Python, R, or similar languages used for model development
  • Expertise in using statistical libraries (e.g. Scikit-learn, NumPy, Pandas) and platforms for model development and back-testing
  • Strong analytical skills with a deep understanding of supply-demand dynamics in the energy sector
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present complex market insights in an accessible manner
  • Delivers results through realistic planning to accomplish goals
  • Listens actively and invites new ideas for exchanged opinions, then influences and acts to drive positive performance and achieve results
  • Builds positive relationships based on trust and seeks collaboration across organizational boundaries to achieve goals
