Job Description

Job Title: Powder Coater II
Department: Paint / Screen / Rivet
Reports To: Area Supervisor
Location: Binghamton, NY

Position Summary:

The Powder Coater II is responsible for the advanced preparation, application, curing, and inspection of powder-coated finishes on metal components. This role operates with a higher level of independence and technical proficiency, including process optimization, troubleshooting, and training of less experienced personnel. The Powder Coater II ensures consistent production of high-quality, durable, and cosmetically acceptable finishes that meet or exceed company and customer specifications.

Key Responsibilities:

• Surface Preparation
o Prepare metal components for powder coating, including cleaning, degreasing, masking, and complex part hanging to ensure optimal coverage and efficiency.
o Evaluate incoming parts for surface defects and take corrective action or escalate issues prior to coating.
o Recommend improvements to fixturing and masking techniques to enhance quality and throughput.

• Powder Coating Application
o Set up, operate, and optimize powder coating equipment, including spray guns, booths, and reclaim systems.
o Apply powder with consistent film build and cosmetic quality across a variety of part geometries and finishes.
o Independently adjust parameters such as voltage, air pressure, and gun settings to achieve optimal transfer efficiency and finish quality.
o Troubleshoot application issues including Faraday cage effects, uneven coverage, and contamination.

• Curing & Process Control
o Monitor and verify oven performance, including temperature profiling and dwell time validation.
o Ensure proper curing across varying part masses and configurations.
o Identify and resolve curing-related defects such as undercure, overbake, or gloss inconsistencies.

• Inspection & Quality
o Perform detailed visual, thickness, and adhesion inspections using appropriate measurement tools.
o Identify root causes of coating defects and implement corrective actions.
o Lead rework decisions and ensure proper segregation and documentation of nonconforming material.
o Maintain high cosmetic standards, especially for customer-facing or critical components.

• Maintenance, Safety & Housekeeping
o Perform routine maintenance and deeper cleaning of coating equipment to prevent contamination and ensure consistent performance.
o Identify equipment issues proactively and assist with troubleshooting and minor repairs.
o Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols related to powders, grounding, ventilation, and oven operation.

• Documentation & Continuous Improvement
o Accurately record production metrics, process parameters, and quality data.
o Participate in and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives related to coating efficiency, material usage, and defect reduction.
o Assist in developing and refining work instructions and standard operating procedures.
o Train and mentor Powder Coater I employees on proper techniques, equipment use, and quality standards.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum 3–5 years of experience in powder coating or industrial finishing.
• Strong working knowledge of powder coating systems, materials, and curing processes.
• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot coating defects and optimize process parameters.
• Familiarity with inspection tools (e.g., mil thickness gauges) and quality standards.
• Ability to read and interpret work instructions, prints, and process specifications.
• Strong attention to detail with a focus on cosmetic excellence.
• Ability to lift and handle metal components and stand for extended periods.
• Solid mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in a finishing environment with exposure to powder materials, curing ovens, and industrial equipment. Proper PPE, including respirators, gloves, and safety glasses, is required. The role involves frequent standing, lifting, and working in elevated temperature areas near curing ovens. Additional responsibility includes supporting equipment setup, troubleshooting, and training activities within the work area.

The hiring range for this position in the primary work location of Binghamton, New York is: $16.49-$22.69 per hour.The hiring range for other Bose work locations may vary.
