Transforming the future of media! We pride ourselves on sharing engaging stories that inform, inspire, and connect!
The Role

Summary:
Ambitious, proven, news-breaking journalist to report on our local National Hockey League team, the Minnesota Wild. To be clear, this is not a generic "pro hockey" beat, nor an "NHL" beat. Rather, this is a job writing about our local team, the Minnesota Wild, in the capital of the State of Hockey, downtown in the city of Olympic champion Herb Brooks. Hockey right here, hell yeah. We don't want stenography, box scores or do-whatever-the-pack-does reporting. Borrring. Your audience is not a few insiders, nor the dwindling Twitter/X crowd, nor the rest of the press corps. Your audience is that great group of all-age hockey lovers here, those who know their X's and O's and those who might not know an X from an O but for sure are tuned to the thrill of slapping sticks and skates ripping across the ice. This is a big, passionate, news-hungry crowd whose hockey context is broad, deep, long ... and local.
We need you to connect with that context and that audience to break news, explore questions and ideas of distinct interest here, deliver reporting our readers can't get anywhere else, concentrate on substance and experiment with form in ways that serve the readers we have, attract more, and convert them into paying subscribers.
What you will do:

  • Build relationships with a variety of people in the St. Paul area to inform and deepen your understanding of the place and its relationship with hockey
  • Build relationships with the team, its ownership/management, agents and a wide variety of other sources based on your demonstration of intense interest, fair-mindedness and drive to deliver news, answers and context to our audience
  • Break news day to day and with longer-term enterprise; this requires juggling and imagination
  • Understand and execute on our news strategy, using the various tools that support it, including digital metrics, to drive traffic, audience engagement and subscriptions
  • Experiment with form and format
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with colleagues and supervisors, in season and out
  • Throw in whenever big news breaks, whatever the subject

What you will bring:

  • Reporting experience in a fast-paced news organization
  • Proven ability to juggle enterprise reporting with daily deadlines
  • Extensive training in the ethics and principles of journalism
  • Knowledge of social media tools and ethics
  • Proven ability to cut through thickets of bias -- including your own -- to get to substance and deliver fair-minded journalism grounded in curiosity and regard for readers
  • Commitment to accuracy, attention to detail, and deadlines
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required
