The Seattle Times, a family-owned news organization and one of the nation’s premier regional news sources, is seeking a versatile Sports Multiplatform Editor. We’re looking for a sports enthusiast with a stellar understanding of AP style, SEO principles and digital journalism best practices who can exercise excellent news judgment, particularly as relates to coverage of Seattle-area sports teams.
As a sports multiplatform editor, you will copy edit and format stories for The Seattle Times news products with an emphasis on audience engagement. You’ll help promote sports stories through digital best practices and experiment with innovative ideas. You’ll ensure newsworthy content moves rapidly from initial draft to final product for both web and print — with accuracy, clarity, fairness, grammar and style. You should be comfortable working under tight deadlines while supporting multiple editors at once. Ideally, you have previous experience (and mastery) with both AP style and knowledge of local geography and nomenclature.
Schedule: This position has a variable schedule throughout the year, with daily shifts typically spanning 3:00 to 11:00 p.m. From August through January, the weekly schedule would be Saturday through Wednesday to support football coverage. From late-January to mid-August, the schedule shifts to Friday through Tuesday each week.
Applicants may work remotely but must be based in the Puget Sound area.

  • Monitoring trends and readership analytics in real-time and providing the sports department with relevant information on SEO, trending topics and follow-up stories based on trending/breaking news.
  • Supporting accurate and timely updates and info during breaking news. This could include a range of responsibilities, including running or contributing to live updates or providing SEO advice to editors.
  • Maintaining a consistently high-quality product with sharp grammar and unfailing accuracy.
  • Multitasking with the demands of production work — editing on deadline as well as communicating continually on Slack and email.
  • Upholding our ethics code and standards of fairness, independence and inclusion.
  • Staying up to date on digital best practices to optimize our content.
  • Practicing a commitment to coverage that is inclusive. This means considering in our stories, headlines, photos and other display type the full range of human diversity with respect to race, sexual orientation, ability, language, culture, gender, age and identity.
