The Need
For over 25 years, IJM has pioneered the work to protect vulnerable people from violence. 9 out of 9 times in the last decade, IJM’s Justice System Strengthening Projects have reduced slavery and violence between 50 and 85% for very large populations of people in poverty. As we grow to expand our impact to protect 500 million people from violence, we are seeking a Specialist, Survivor Engagement.
The Specialist, Survivor Engagement is responsible for the strategy, implementation, alignment to IJM’s global strategy, and day-to-day management of IJM’s Global Survivor Network (GSN) and other key Survivor Leadership initiatives to ensure meaningful engagement of people with lived experience. The Specialist, Survivor Engagement will collaborate with IJM’s global staff and with survivor leaders to strengthen the GSN, and to ensure IJM programs are informed by survivors.
This position is hybrid (onsite Tuesdays & Thursdays) if located in the Washington, DC area or remote for non-local candidates. It reports to the Global Vice President, Advocacy and Survivor Leadership and is only available for candidates with the right to work in the US.
Responsibilities
Leadership and Management:
Provide strategic leadership on implementation of the Global Survivor Network strategy, alongside the GSN team and the GSN Leadership Council;
Provide strategic leadership for the Survivor Leadership dimension of IJM’s Protection Model, for IJM’s commitment to ensure that all IJM programs are meaningfully informed by people with lived experience;
Lead collaborative efforts with program colleagues, GSN leaders, and the Global Innovation and Design Team to refine the vision for GSN chapters at the “impact” phase of growth and develop resources to equip GSN chapters to operate as independent entities and Implementing Partners;
Lead IJM’s Survivor Leadership Community of Practice, engaging IJM staff who have a responsibility to implement survivor engagement program strategies and the growth of the GSN;
Provide coaching to IJM project teams and GSN leaders in implementing the GSN strategy, ensuring goals and strategies are aligned with overall protection goals;
Provide expert consulting to Global People Support on efforts to make IJM an inclusive workplace for survivors of violence.
Strategy & Knowledge Development & Implementation:
Serve as subject matter expert on survivor leadership internally and with partners, as well as through select public engagements;
Provide coaching to project-level colleagues and key IJM leaders on implementation of the GSN strategy, including launching chapters, investing in the capacity of survivors leaders, public narrative, and designing joint campaigns;
Provide coaching to regional and project-level colleagues and work through the Survivor Leadership Community of Practice to ensure survivor leadership is shaping IJM program design and delivery;
Drive learning agenda for Survivor Leadership at IJM and ensure regional teams implement evaluation tools to measure impact of survivor leadership, engaging people with lived experience at each step to ensure survivors are meaningfully informing and benefitting from evaluation;
Ensure the GSN strategy continues to be informed by survivor input into our evaluative practices.
Networking & Partnership:
Work alongside the relevant team members to ensure the GSN is integrated into IJM’s national and global activation strategies;
Provide expert consultation to Global People Support in helping IJM to become a more survivor-inclusive, trauma-informed workplace, and position IJM externally as an authentic leader and thoughtful partner amongst other organizations that are, or are trying to become more, survivor-led and informed;
Facilitate opportunities for GSN Leadership Council to engage with other survivor coalitions and groups, represent IJM’s survivor engagement strategy externally, and equip IJM leaders and key staff with messaging on the same.
Policies and Procedures:
Ensure best practices and risk management of organizational GSN projects and initiatives (ex. GSN brand, partnerships with other organizations or coalitions, GSN Leadership Council).
Training and Development:
Manage and refine resources/curriculum that will be implemented to equip survivors to advocate in their national context and develop new tools as necessary;
Orient organizational staff to the vision and strategy of survivor leadership and the GSN as a critical force to accelerate protection;
Provide coaching/mentorship to members of the GSN team and the GSN Leadership Council.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree.
At least 10 years of relevant experience, including survivor engagement and community organizing.
Experience in complex program management, including assigning and monitoring work to ensure projects are completed on time and on budget.
Exceptional communication and ability to communicate complex information and synthesize input from multiple, diverse stakeholders in a simple, concise manner.
Demonstrated experience with coaching leaders and teams for strategic results;
Survivor of violence preferred; allies expected to foster and represent diverse and dynamic inputs of people with lived experience.
Technical Competencies
Very high rigor and ability to synthesize research, data, facts, trends, case studies, and stories for both internal and external audiences;
Expertise in trauma-informed practices;
Complex project (or program) management experience, and/or a strong eye for detail and prioritization;
Demonstrated ability to co-create content and ensure survivor input is shaping strategy and communication;
Ability to synthesize data, trends, and stories to distill and socialize learning;
Strategic planning experience;
Experience with human centered design preferred.
Non-Technical Competencies
Exceptional ability in written and oral communications, including facilitation and coaching experience, and the ability to champion change across a matrixed organization;
Intercultural competence;
Collaborative style with the ability to work with global teams in a human-centered manner and to lead through influence;
