TITLE: NDT QUALITY SPECIALIST IV 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THE NDT QUALITY SPECIALIST IV 

  • Direct the proactive improvement of NDT and other processes and product quality at Carpenter to increase first time through (FTT) through project teams, using industry best practices. 

  • Direct the establishment of Critical to Quality measures (CTQ), Key Process Characteristics (KPC), Key Control Characteristics (KCC), control plans, and FMEA through project teams, using industry best practices. 

  • Effectively mentor NDT Level 1, 2, and 3s in appropriate quality strategies, tools, and techniques. 

  • Proactively anticipate and identify quality issues to reduce claims, remakes, scrap, and deviations from standard work to increase customer satisfaction. 

  • Drive the improvement of critical work center Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) through project teams. 

  • Establish and manage a framework for gathering and synthesizing data to effectively detect and solve quality issues to prevent recurrence using appropriate quality strategies, tools, and techniques using industry best practices. 

  • Lead other NDT Level 3 personnel with complex NDT, inspection, measurement, and sampling methods. 

  • Proactively identify process improvement opportunities, stabilize NDT and other processes and implement statistical process controls (SPC) to establish and maintain process capability.

  • Master the most complex NDT, inspection, measurement and sampling methods and lead efforts for method improvements (MSA).

  • Provides guidance NDT Level 1, 2, and 3s with complex NDT, inspection, measurement, and sampling methods. 

  • Lead the development of robust processes as part of the new product introduction (NPI) through project teams. 

  • Develop training materials and provide training for NDT personnel on quality strategies, techniques, and tools. 

  • Develop and oversee a program for preventative maintenance and calibration of production NDT equipment.  

  • Direct the maintenance of records, logs, and other formal documentation required for specific NDT calibrations, evaluations, and certifications. 

  • Oversee the qualification program for nondestructive testing personnel and procedures.  

  • Review nondestructive testing specifications accompanying customer orders or inquiries and review specification abstracts. 

  • Assists NDT personnel in reviewing complex nondestructive testing specifications and specification abstracts. 

  • Lead both internal and external audits of the Company’s quality program as it pertains to the application of NDT. 

  • Perform all other duties and special projects as assigned. 

 

REQUIRED FOR THE NDT QUALITY SPECIALIST IV 

  • High school diploma required, bachelor's degree preferred. 

  • ASNT Level 3 Certification in ultrasonic inspection. 

  • Must obtain Carpenter Level 3 Certification within 6 months of hire date. 

  • 6+ years of experience as an NDT Level 3 working in such a role. 

  • Interpret internal/external business issues and recommend best practices in own function.  Has developed depth and breadth of expertise in own function. 

  • Effectively manages projects or teams, including coordination of resources outside of own area.   

  • Forecasts and plans resource requirements for projects or teams.

  • Monitors and controls costs for own work and may manage costs/budgets for large projects or areas. 

  • Expert understanding of industrial/manufacturing principles, standards, methods and practices, of disciplined problem-solving methods, and of ultrasonic, eddy current, visual, liquid penetrant, and magnetic nondestructive testing methods.

  • Ability to facilitate cross-functional teams to resolve white space issues. 

  • Interact with floor personnel, technical, operations, management, customers, and regulatory agencies. 

  • Ability to apply continuous improvement methods, such as practical problem solving (PPS), Six Sigma, Lean principles, and Error Proofing as a facilitator or team leader. 

  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks and make appropriate decisions, to perform independent work on larger assignments, to work in a production manufacturing environment, to successfully coordinate internal and external resources, and to operator a computer workstation with common Microsoft products. 

  • Disciplined results orientation. 

  • Know and adhere to all Carpenter policies and procedures. 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, well organized and the ability to prioritize tasks and make appropriate decisions. 

  • Willing to work in a fast-paced, ever-changing work environment.
