About the Role

The Global Programs team writes foundational skill programs. One of these is a leveled reading program, which has been designed so that each grade in each of our programs receives a reading course pitched at the just-right level.

For many students, we don’t have a just-right level to offer yet. In schools just starting a partnership with us, there is a staggering number of students who are in the middle of primary school or older and cannot read at all. The lowest level of our reading program isn’t right for them; it was written for young children who have had little exposure to print before, who have more language and skills to learn at a slower rate.

We are building a remedial reading program for older students who need to learn basic phonics and decoding with materials that are developmentally appropriate, no-frills, and focused tightly on catching students up to their peers.

As the Literacy Specialist, you will be the lead author of this program.

What You Will Do

  • Design a scope and sequence for a year-long remedial program that brings students reading below 40 correct words per minute on texts leveled at Grade 1 to 60 correct words per minute to texts leveled at Grade 3.
  • Design a textbook and create specifications for decodable reading passages
  • Develop fully-scripted lessons that contain phonics, decoding, and remedial reading exercises
  • Work with a program director and team of writers to guide the execution of all program components
  • Apply feedback from stakeholders to iterate on and perfect the program

What You Should Have

  • At least 5 years of experience teaching reading interventions or developing remedial reading programs
  • Pedagogical alignment with approaches based on systematic phonics and the science of reading and scripted instruction
  • Experience responding to fluency data to help students meet fluency goals or adjust interventions
  • Openness to adapting materials or an approach to suit different global contexts
  • Familiarity with standard reading assessments, programs, and norms (EGRA, DIBELS, Woodcock Reading Mastery tests, Reading A-Z, Hasbrouck and Tindal, Reading Mastery)
