Description of Work
The Virology/Special Serology Unit of the NC State Laboratory of Public Health is currently accepting applications for a Medical Laboratory Technologist I vacancy. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a technologist in the Special Serology Laboratory at the NC State Laboratory of Public Health performing diagnostic testing of human specimens for detection ofvector-borne disease pathogens, as well as pathogen testing of vector arthropod species. The primary methods used for detection is Enzyme Immunoassay {EIA) and Real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) methods. This position will also be involved in performing new methods that are introduced in the Special Serology lab, as well as arbovirus mosquito surveillance testing under BSL3 conditions. Laboratory duties this position performs includes specimen accessioning, testing, interpretation and shipping, as well as provide assistance to other laboratory testing areas during outbreak responses.
The Special Serology Unit Medical Laboratory Technologist I will perform duties that include though not limited to the following:
Performs routine testing of clinical specimens for detection of various vector-borne diseases and vaccine preventable diseases using molecular and serologic methods.
Participates in the NCSLPH respiratory protection program to enable BSL-3 work and perform testing of mosquito pools under BSL-3 conditions
Performs instrument preventative maintenance activities including periodic (daily, monthly, quarterly, etc.) procedures per manufacturer's protocol
Participates in assay verifications and validations or other QA studies, cross-trains in other virology sections to enable redundancy, and participates in laboratory committees, demonstrations, and training of students
Works holiday and weekend hours in emergency response situations as need is determined by laboratory management

Salary Grade Range: $58,265.00-$87,396.00Recruitment Range: $58,265.00-$59,471.00Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement.
The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:
Basic knowledge of biology, anatomy, and general laboratory practices
Skilled in using and troubleshooting laboratory labware and laboratory equipment
Able to perform manual test procedures that require use of equipment that require physical coordination.
Basic knowledge of the hazards of working with potentially infectious materials and how to take appropriate precautions to avoid infection
Ability to adhere to SOPs, follow complex oral and written instructions, and instruct others in complex technical procedures
Physical Requirements:
An occupational medical assessment may be required to determine your ability to safely work with biological, chemical, or radiological hazards.
This position may also require periodic medical screenings to confirm safety practices are effectively preventing occupational injury or illness.
All costs associated with obtaining occupational health services are covered by NCSLPH.
This position: Works frequently with infectious disease agents that require the use of personal protective equipment, such as a respiratory
Uses laboratory equipment requiring the ability to manipulate items with fingers, ability to grasp, and ability to feel/perceive the attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture.

Virology/Serology (VS) performs highly complex laboratory tests to identify infections with a variety of bacterial and viral pathogens of public health significance. The majority of reports generated by this Unit are used by state and local health officials in the diagnosis, treatment, surveillance, and control of communicable disease. Virology/Serology is organized into four laboratory areas: Bacterial STD, Serology, Special Serology, Viral Culture/Rabies

Bachelor's degree in medical technology, chemistry, or a biological science from an appropriately accredited institution

Associate degree in medical technology from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in a medical laboratory

Completion of a Certified Laboratory Assistant course in medical technology or a comparable course and three years of experience in a medical laboratory
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience.
