Special Counsel, Liability

The Opportunity

A highly regarded insurance disputes practice is seeking an experienced Special Counsel to join its Sydney team, working on a sophisticated portfolio of complex liability and casualty matters for leading Australian and international insurers.

This is an opportunity to step into a senior role with genuine autonomy, managing high-value and technically challenging litigation while working alongside respected insurance specialists. The practice acts across a broad spectrum of liability claims, offering exposure to major personal injury disputes, public and product liability matters, property damage litigation and complex recovery actions.

The role also provides the opportunity to mentor junior lawyers, strengthen client relationships and contribute to the continued growth of a well-established insurance practice.

The Role

Working closely with a collaborative team of experienced insurance litigators, you will be responsible for:

• Managing a diverse portfolio of complex liability and casualty litigation
  
• Advising insurer clients on strategy, liability, indemnity and quantum
  
• Conducting litigation across State and Federal jurisdictions
  
• Managing significant personal injury, public liability, product liability, property damage and recovery matters
  
• Developing and maintaining strong relationships with insurer and corporate clients
  
• Supervising, mentoring and supporting junior lawyers within the team
  
• Working collaboratively with counsel, experts and external stakeholders to deliver successful outcomes
  
• Providing commercially focused advice throughout the life of each matter
  

About You

You are an accomplished insurance litigator with significant experience managing complex defendant insurance matters and the confidence to lead files independently.

You will also bring:

• Approximately 10 or more years' post-admission experience
  
• Strong expertise across liability, casualty or general insurance litigation
  
• Extensive experience appearing in, or managing matters through, State and Federal Courts
  
• Excellent drafting, negotiation and advocacy skills
  
• A commercial and strategic approach to dispute resolution
  
• The ability to build trusted client relationships and contribute to business development
  
• A collaborative leadership style with a genuine interest in mentoring and developing junior lawyers
