The Sonographer Supervisor is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and clinical operations of the Sonography Department within Atlanta Perinatal Associates. This position oversees the daily operations of the Sonography department, ensuring exceptional patient care, high-quality diagnostic imaging, regulatory compliance, staff development, and operational efficiency.

In addition to producing two-dimensional in-utero ultrasonic images. the Sonographer Supervisor provides direct leadership to the sonography team by managing staffing, mentoring employees, monitoring quality assurance initiatives, implementing best practices, and collaborating closely with MFM physicians and executive leadership to achieve organizational goals.

The ideal candidate possesses extensive MFM ultrasound experience, demonstrated leadership abilities, exceptional clinical judgment, and a passion for developing high-performing teams while delivering outstanding patient care.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Clinical Leadership

  1. Perform advanced diagnostic Maternal-Fetal Medicine ultrasound examinations, including:
  • Level I and Level II Obstetrical Ultrasounds
  • High-Risk Obstetrical Ultrasounds
  • Transabdominal and Transvaginal Ultrasounds
  • First Trimester Screening and Nuchal Translucency (NT)
  • Growth Ultrasounds
  • Doppler Studies
  • Fetal Echocardiography
  • Ultrasound guidance for invasive procedures, including amniocentesis
  • 3D and 4D ultrasound imaging, when appropriate
  1. Ensure all ultrasound studies meet established quality standards before physician interpretation.
  2. Optimize ultrasound equipment settings to obtain superior diagnostic images.
  3. Assist physicians during specialized procedures when required.
  4. Obtain patient vital signs and perform ancillary clinical duties, including non-stress testing (NST), electronic fetal monitoring (EFM), and Rhogam administration, when within scope of practice.
  5. Complete all required clinical documentation, billing information, and genetic testing requisitions accurately and timely.
Department Leadership and Management
  1. Direct the daily operations of the Sonography Department across all clinic locations.
  2. Supervise, coach, mentor, and support all sonographers and sonography support staff.
  3. Develop staffing schedules and ensure appropriate coverage based on patient volume.
  4. Conduct performance evaluations, establish performance goals, and provide ongoing coaching and professional development.
  5. Participate in recruiting, interviewing, hiring, onboarding, and retaining highly qualified sonographers.
  6. Address employee performance concerns in partnership with Human Resources.
  7. Foster a positive, collaborative, and accountable work environment.
  8. Serve as the clinical and operational resource for physicians, providers, and staff regarding ultrasound services.
  9. Lead regular departmental meetings and communicate organizational updates effectively.
Quality Assurance and Compliance
  1. Establish and maintain departmental quality assurance and quality improvement programs.
  2. Conduct regular image quality reviews to ensure compliance with Maternal-Fetal Medicine standards.
  3. Develop, implement, and update ultrasound protocols and clinical workflows.
  4. Ensure compliance with:
  • ARDMS standards
  • AIUM guidelines
  • OSHA requirements
  • HIPAA regulations
  • Infection prevention standards
  • Organizational policies and procedures
  1. Monitor quality metrics and implement corrective action plans when needed.
  2. Prepare the department for accreditation reviews, inspections, and regulatory audits.
Operational Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with physicians and executive leadership to improve workflow.
  • Monitor departmental productivity and operational performance.
  • Manage department inventory and supply ordering.
  • May assist with budgeting and capital equipment recommendations.
  • Develop and maintain departmental policies and standard operating procedures.
Education and Staff Development
  • Train and mentor newly hired sonographers.
  • Coordinate orientation programs for new employees.
  • Supervise sonography students from IMU
  • Conduct competency assessments and annual skills evaluations.
  • Promote continuing education and professional certification.
  • Encourage evidence-based practice and continuous learning within the department.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support the needs of the practice.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduate of an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography program.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in Obstetrical/Gynecological or Maternal-Fetal Medicine ultrasound.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of supervisory, management, or leadership experience leading sonography teams, preferably in a Maternal-Fetal Medicine or high-risk OB/GYN setting.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong conflict resolution, coaching, and employee development skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Strong knowledge of quality assurance, accreditation standards, and regulatory compliance.
  • Must be willing to travel to different locations and serve as backup as needed.

REGISTRY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Current ARDMS certification
  • Nuchal Translucency (NT) certification preferred.
  • Fetal Echocardiography (FE) certification preferred.
  • Current BLS/CPR certification.
  • Must maintain all required certifications throughout employment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and stand; use hands to manipulate objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
