Job Description
The Soil Scientist will examine and classify the physical characteristics of soil to determine its suitability for a wide variety of crops. Positions are available in the Western Cape, Free State, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, North West and Limpopo.
Candidates must be willing to travel extensively, both locally and internationally, and to work every second Saturday when required.
Successful candidates will commence employment in January 2027.
Main Responsibilities
- Soil classification of orchards and/or fields
- GIS – QGIS: digitise the analysed soil physical properties
- Documenting the soil classification reports
- Feedback to farmers/clients
- Drafting of drainage layout
- Drafting of orchard designs
- Drafting of irrigation blocks based on the physical characteristics of the soil
- Indicate appropriate probe positions based on the physical characteristics of the soil
- Ad Hoc or other related duties as assigned

- Basic knowledge of soil classification and soil science
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to convey technical information
- A strong sense of responsibility
- Able to work independently and as part of a team
- Excellent attention to detail
- Able to work under pressure
- Effective organisational skills and the ability to prioritise tasks
- Able to think critically
- Computer literate
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
- BSc Agric (Agronomy/Horticulture) or relevant four-year BSc degree in Agriculture/Soil Science or BSc Geology/ Environmental Science.
- BSc Agriculture applicants must have Soil Science as a subject on 3rd year level.
Experience
- Experience in GIS advantageous
- Experience in any crops advantageous
Other specific requirements
- Fluent in Afrikaans and English, both spoken and written
- Owns a pickup truck (bakkie)
- Enjoys working outdoors
- Comfortable working long hours when needed
- Eager to learn and expand their scientific knowledge
Skills Required
- Four-year BSc degree in Agriculture, Soil Science, Geology, Environmental Science, Agronomy, or Horticulture
- BSc Agriculture applicants must have completed Soil Science at third-year level
- Fluent Afrikaans and English, spoken and written
- Own pickup truck
- Computer literacy
- GIS experience
- Experience with crops
- Willingness to work outdoors, long hours, and every second Saturday when required
- Willingness to travel extensively locally and internationally
