Summary Generated by Built In

Software Services helps SEL customers successfully adopt, integrate, and grow the value they get from SEL's software platforms — starting with Blueframe. As a Software Services Engineer, you will work directly with utility and industrial customers to help them get up and running, connect Blueframe with the systems they already use, and turn day-one deployments into long-term operational success. You will spend your time solving real problems, working alongside customers and SEL teams, and helping build a growing library of practices, tools, and reusable solutions that make each engagement better than the last.

You do not need to know Blueframe, DTS, or every technology mentioned below to be successful here. We are looking for engineers who enjoy figuring things out, care about customer outcomes, communicate clearly, and want to grow. We will teach you the SEL-specific pieces.

What to Expect

This is a strategic new team at SEL, and you would be one of the people helping shape how it works. Expect variety, direct customer contact, close collaboration, and a role that grows as the team grows.

  • You'll work directly with customers on projects that matter to their operations — the kind of work where a good outcome is visible to the people who bought the product.
  • You'll learn a lot, on purpose.Blueframe, DTS, Code Studio, our reference architectures, and the way we approach integrations are all things you will pick up on the job with strong support from the team.
  • You'll wear multiple hats. A given week might include an architecture conversation with a customer, developing a small integration, working through a tricky data problem, writing something for the reusable-asset library, or helping a teammate think through a design decision.
  • You'll collaborate broadly. You will partner with our Project Managers, Software Services teammates, R&D, Technical Support, Sales, and Engineering Services. When you find something worth improving, there is a real path for that feedback to reach the product.
  • You'll use AI as part of your workflow.AI tools are increasingly part of how we work — helping with drafting, testing, documentation, and knowledge reuse. You do not need AI expertise; you just need to be interested in using it well.
  • Your work will compound. Reusable assets, playbooks, dashboards, and lessons learned that you help create will make the next engagement — and the next engineer — more successful.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support customer engagements from early discovery through deployment, testing, and operationalization.
  • Help design, configure, deploy, and validate Blueframe-based solutions in customer environments, including centralized and virtualized deployments.
  • Work with customers to understand their integration needs and help connect Blueframe with the systems they already rely on.
  • Troubleshoot systems that span software, networks, virtual environments, device communications, and data flows, and communicate what you find clearly to customers and teammates.
  • Contribute to test planning, validation, and readiness activities that give customers confidence at go-live.
  • Create clear, useful documentation — architecture notes, deployment guides, configuration references, runbooks, and customer-facing materials.
  • Contribute to a growing library of reusable assets such as configuration templates, dashboards, integration patterns, checklists, and small automations.
  • Share what you see in the field — recurring issues, common friction points, and product feedback — so that R&D, Product Engineering, and Technical Support can act on it.
  • Collaborate with Software Services Project Managers, other engineers, and SEL cross-functional partners across the engagement lifecycle.
  • Mentor teammates as your experience grows.
  • Understand. Create. Simplify.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical field; equivalent technical experience will also be considered.
  • Two or more years of hands-on technical experience in a field such as software engineering, systems integration, automation, IT infrastructure, industrial control systems, technical support, or a related area.
  • Comfort troubleshooting technical systems that involve multiple layers (software, networking, data, and configuration) and structured reasoning about what to check and why.
  • Willingness and interest to learn Blueframe, DTS, Code Studio, and the SEL technologies most relevant to Software Services engagements.
  • Clear written and verbal communication with technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Comfort working directly with customers and collaborating across teams.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience
  • Experience with SEL products, Blueframe, RTACs, communication processors, protection relays, SCADA, or substation automation.
  • Familiarity with virtualization, networking, or IT/OT security concepts (firewalls, VLANs, certificates, secure communications).
  • Some scripting or programming experience (Python, PowerShell, SQL, JavaScript, or similar).
  • Exposure to APIs and system-to-system data integration.
  • Experience with automation platforms, dashboards, or reporting tools.
  • Familiarity with FATs, SATs, commissioning, or field validation activities.
  • Experience working with utility, industrial, or critical-infrastructure customers and their operations, cybersecurity, or compliance teams.

You do not need most of these to apply. If you have some of them, tell us — but the traits above (learning, troubleshooting, communication, curiosity) matter more.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to translate customer goals into practical technical work.
  • Ability to make sense of complex environments by breaking problems into layers.
  • Ability to work productively with uncertainty, ask good questions, and drive to answers.
  • Interest in continually improving how work gets done  for yourself, for the team, and for customers.
