The Role: Morningstar seeks a We are looking for a Software Engineering Team Lead who is excited to remain deeply hands-on while taking on light people-leadership responsibilities. In this hybrid role, you will design and build critical systems, set engineering standards, mentor the team, and directly manage two software engineers to help them grow and deliver high-quality work.
This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced engineer who wants to influence technical direction while developing leadership skills in a supportive, collaborative environment. This position is located in our Mumbai office.
Technical

• Design, implement, and maintain scalable, reliable software systems.
• Lead technical architecture discussions and drive key engineering decisions.
• Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code.
• Review code and provide constructive feedback to ensure high standards.
• Collaborate with product, design, and other cross-functional partners to shape requirements and deliver high-impact features.
• Monitor system performance, diagnose issues, and propose improvements.
• Champion best practices around documentation, testing, CI/CD, and security.

Leadership & Team Management

• Manage and coachjunior software engineers, providing regular feedback and supporting their growth.
• Help set team goals and ensure alignment with broader engineering objectives.
• Facilitate sprint planning, retrospectives, and other team ceremonies as needed.
• Support hiring efforts by participating in interviews and shaping the team's hiring bar.
• Foster a positive, inclusive, and high-performing team culture.

Qualifications Required

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience (or equivalent).
• Strong proficiency in Java 8+, Java Spring Boot
• Experience designing and owning production systems end to end.
• Demonstrated ability to mentor or lead other engineers.
• Excellent collaboration and communication skills.
• Ability to balance hands-on technical work with team leadership responsibilities.

Preferred

• Prior experience as a team lead, tech lead, or manager of a small engineering group.
• Experience working in an Agile environment.
• Familiarity with AWS and modern DevOps practices.
• Track record of driving engineering improvements or technical initiatives.
