Job Summary:

We are seeking an exceptional Software Engineering Manager who combines deep technical expertise with strong people leadership to build and lead a team of engineers developing the next generation of invoice and payment automation solutions. You will be responsible for both writing code in the early stages of development on projects, and leading the team as it scales and matures, ensuring delivery of high-quality software while fostering a culture of cloud-native excellence, continuous improvement, and technical mentorship. This role requires someone who thrives at the intersection of architecture, hands-on development, people management, and metrics-driven delivery.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for building, leading, and developing  software engineering teams consisting of both engineers and QA professionals
  • Directly responsible for hiring, onboarding, performance management, mentoring, and professional development of team members
  • Conduct regular one-on-ones, performance reviews, and career development discussions
  • Foster a collaborative, high-performance team culture focused on quality, innovation, and continuous learning

Essential Functions: Duties and Responsibilities

  • Build and lead a high-performing engineering team through recruiting, hiring, and developing top talent with cloud-native expertise
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership by actively coding, especially during initial project phases before the team is fully staffed
  • Design and implement cloud-native applications using .NET, Java, React, and AWS services (Lambda, ECS, EKS, SQS, SNS, RDS, S3, CloudWatch)
  • Architect scalable, maintainable solutions leveraging microservices, serverless architectures, and cloud-native design patterns where appropriate
  • Collaborate with architects and the VP of Engineering on architectural decisions and technical strategy
  • Oversee the execution of software development projects using Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban), ensuring adherence to timelines and quality standards
  • Establish and track key performance indicators (KPIs) including velocity, deployment frequency, lead time, change failure rate, mean time to recovery, code quality metrics, and technical debt
  • Implement and enforce best practices for cloud-native development, Infrastructure as Code, and CI/CD pipelines
  • Drive the adoption of comprehensive testing strategies including unit tests, integration tests, and automated regression testing
  • Champion DevSecOps practices, ensuring security is integrated throughout the development lifecycle
  • Mentor team members on cloud-native development practices, AWS services, and modern software engineering techniques
  • Partner with AI engineers to integrate artificial intelligence capabilities into applications including generative AI, LLMs, classification models, and OCR
  • Collaborate with product management to translate business requirements into technical solutions and realistic delivery plans
  • Manage technical debt and ensure sustainable development velocity through regular refactoring and quality improvements
  • Conduct and facilitate code reviews, ensuring high-quality code and knowledge sharing across the team
  • Partner with DevOps to support the development of CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions for automated testing and deployment
  • Ensure applications meet performance, scalability, security, and compliance requirements (PCI-DSS, SOC2)
  • Foster a culture of innovation, experimentation, and continuous learning
  • Provide regular reporting on team health, project status, risks, and metrics to VP of Engineering and stakeholders
  • Support integration efforts with ERP systems, banking platforms, and third-party financial technology services
  • Coach team members on database & application performance optimization including proper use of ORMs, indexing, and parallel processing
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies and adapt processes to maximize team effectiveness
  • Manage engineering escalation rotations and incident response for the team
  • Remove blockers and ensure the team has the resources and support needed to succeed
  • Stay current with emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices in FinTech and cloud computing

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Proven ability to build and lead high-performing engineering teams
  • Strong hands-on technical skills with ability to code production-quality software in .NET (C#) and modern front-end frameworks
  • Deep expertise in cloud-native application development on AWS
  • Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code tools (AWS CDK, CloudFormation)
  • Strong understanding of CI/CD practices and experience implementing automated pipelines using GitHub Actions
  • Experience with database design, optimization, and performance tuning (PostgreSQL, SQL Server)
  • Knowledge of software development methodologies including Agile, Scrum, and Kanban
  • Experience establishing and tracking engineering metrics and KPIs
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to explain complex technical concepts to various audiences
  • Proven mentoring and coaching abilities
  • Understanding of compliance requirements in regulated industries (PCI-DSS, SOC2)
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Passion for continuous learning and staying current with technology trends

Education and Experience:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in software development.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience leading comparable teams.
  • Experience developing and deploying SaaS applications.

Preferred:

  • Experience in the FinTech industry.
  • Experience integrating with ERP systems, banking platforms, and financial technology services.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times
  • Must possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the tasks normally associated with an office position that involves standing, sitting, reaching, manual dexterity to operate office machines, stooping, bending to handle files and supplies, and mobility to complete errands or deliveries
  • May work at computer monitors for prolonged periods with danger of eye strain and muscle pain
