Job Description:

This is an R&D Mainframe Software Engineering Manager position for Mainframe Output Management
Products
: View/Deliver, Spool, Web Viewer products with our Data Management Value Stream.

You are an inspiring hands-on Software Engineering Manager that can coach your team to continued engineering excellence applying the Agile Framework. You understand what it takes to build mission critical and complex software products. 

You are a servant leader who is respected by your engineering teams, which primarily works across new feature Development, Break-Fix, Quality Assurance whilst keeping our foundational Engineering practices steady and sound. You will manage engineering team, and you can effectively work with peers and other teams across product management, architecture, user experience, tech writing and support. You will carry multiple roles, including

  • Product Leader – Assist the Product Owner (PO) in evangelizing the product and its future direction.
  • Engineering Leader – Lead your development team in best practices and product code quality.
  • Development Coach – Mentor team members in their efforts to strengthen development skills.
  • Performance Manager – Radiate team performance and improvement data.

You will also

  • Collaborate with other leaders to establish strategic plans and objectives.
  • Makes decisions on administrative or operational matters including costs, methods, and staffing.
  • Work on issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth knowledge of organizational objectives
  • Establish and assure adherence to budgets, schedules, work plans, and performance requirements.

Prague, Czech Republic location is necessary. Experience: Minimum of 15 years of overall experience of which a minimum of 8-10 years is in management.

Product Leadership

  • Stay up to date on industry news, attend conferences such as Share. Be knowledgeable about developments from our company, our competitors, and the market in general.
  • Engage with customers to learn how they are using our products, the value they see, and their needs. Present and demo the product where feasible. Engage with the support team to understand issues they hear from customers.
  • Be an active leader in the 4-in-a-box model (Product Owner, User Research/Design, Architect, Engineering Leader). Provide input to the Product Owner (PO) on the product strategy and vision, and give feedback to the PO on the content and prioritization of the Product Backlog.

Engineering Leadership

  • Provide support and assistance to teams and their Scrum Masters. Be prompt and proactive in helping remove impediments that are harming teams’ ability to be effective. Actively support SMs’ efforts to protect teams from disturbance, disruption, or outside interference.
  • Identify issues to teams that they might overlook, such as scalability, performance, security, overly optimistic estimates, features that are not consumable, etc.
  • Proactively provide advice and assistance to teams on technical difficulties that arise in the course of doing their work.
  • Stay abreast of developments in the tools, technologies, and practices that teams are using. Solicit input from teams and other stakeholders on tools, technologies and practices that could be useful, and spend time getting hands-on familiarity with them.

Development Coaching

  • Provide mentorship and career development advice and guidance to team members. This mentorship should include both technical mentorship, as well as soft-skills and other aspects of being effective and successful in a development organization.
  • Plan and manage skills development and training for team members. Think carefully about areas where their skills need greatest development, or where the most opportunity for improvement exists; identify appropriate training; and obtain budget and time allowance to complete it.
  • Provide input to the SM to help with team dynamics. Get advice on strengths and weaknesses in how the team and individuals are working and factor feedback into your coaching and performance feedback.
  • Anticipate future people requirements, skills development and training needs, tools and technologies required, hardware, travel, and any other resources that people will require.

Performance Management

  • Provide performance feedback and complete performance evaluations for team members. Informal performance feedback should be provided on a frequent basis and should include feedback from fellow team members. Feedback should be focused on recognition for achievement and opportunities for growth.
  • Remove team members who are not able to perform well within a given team, work effectively with their fellow team members, or perform work at the level of expertise or quality required. This should come only after coaching and training has failed to correct the under-performance.

BS – Comp Sci/Engineering degree required
