The Software Engineering Manager is responsible for delivering the highest quality software engineering solutions, aligned with scope, schedule, and technical requirements.
Organizational Structure: Engineering is organized into Teams and Disciplines within the Innovative Solutions Division. The Software Engineering Manager serves as the technical authority for the Software Engineering Team, supporting all Innovative Solutions Teams and ensuring cross-discipline technical integrity.

- Team 1 – Standards and Modularity: Builds and maintains engineering standards, modules, templates, and rules enabling repeatability and scale.
- Team 2 – Design: Executes project-level engineering using established standards and less complex custom configurations.
- Team 3 – Advanced: Develops novel systems and resolves first-of-kind engineering challenges.
- Team 4 – Manufacturing & Industrial Engineering: Ensures manufacturability, safety, engineering intent, efficiency, and continuous improvement throughout Production.

Responsibilities:
Leadership & Team Development
- Directly oversee and lead the Software Engineering Team.
- Develop the Software Engineering Team by aligning individual goals with company objectives.
- Hire and/or develop Software Engineering Team members, including subject matter experts needed for current and future product lines.
- Mentor Software Engineers I–III, including coaching, code reviews, and professional development.
- Provide appropriate software engineering skillsets to each project to ensure successful execution.
- Support Team 2 by ensuring new engineers are trained in software standards, design methods, and development practices.
- Champion data-driven decision-making, continuous improvement, and adherence to Nomad Core Values.
- Participate in technical meetings and provide strategic recommendations.
Technical Authority & Governance
- Serve as the technical authority for all software engineering work across all Innovation Solutions teams.
- Possess final authority on all matters of software engineering technical correctness, including standards compliance, engineering methods, interface definitions, safety logic, control behavior, and cross-discipline technical integrity.
- Require design changes when software engineering standards or safety logic are not met.
- Support Team 1 in developing and maintaining software design standards, modularity rules, templates, and libraries.
- Conduct peer code reviews ensuring design alignment, quality, and adherence to engineering standards.
- Design complex architecture incorporating security, authentication, authorization, messaging, versioning, data logging, hosting, and integration considerations.
- Establish design methodologies, toolsets, and development roadmaps.
- Produce clean, efficient, high-quality code and ensure delivery of technically sound solutions.
Software Development & Delivery
- Deliver high-quality software engineering solutions aligned with project scope and customer expectations.
- Contribute substantively to software development efforts, including Nomad Total Command (NTC), Portal, and other mission-critical applications.
- Work independently on complex projects, taking ownership of sprint deliverables.
- Develop frontend interfaces and backend systems for internet/intranet and integrated platform applications.
- Create multimedia applications and delegate tasks appropriately.
- Debug and troubleshoot issues across platforms and ensure successful system integration through comprehensive testing.
- Engage in technical project management, task estimation, prioritization, and coordination.
- Manage development priorities and remove or escalate obstacles that impact delivery.
System Architecture & Integration
- Be accountable for technical design elements within connected mobile operation centers, ensuring integrated software systems are safe, ergonomic, durable, and maintainable.
- Ensure software systems integrate cleanly with Electrical, IT, Human Factors, and other engineering disciplines.
- Perform build vs. buy analyses to determine optimal technical solutions.
- Support Team 3 by reviewing and contributing to first-of-kind engineering solutions to ensure technical soundness.
- Support Team 4 by validating manufacturability, optimizing workflows, and ensuring designs are safe, repeatable, and production-ready.
- Collaborate with Quality Assurance and Production to incorporate lessons learned into future product designs.
Applied AI, Intelligent Automation & Advanced Engineering
- Design, develop, and deploy scalable AI/ML systems, including generative AI, agent-based automation, multimodal models, and MLOps pipelines.
- Build and maintain full-stack AI applications ensuring reliability, scalability, and cost-efficiency.
- Implement agentic automation solutions using LLM frameworks such as LangChain, LangGraph, CrewAI, N8N, and related ecosystems.
- Develop automation workflows with UiPath and Power Automate.
- Integrate solutions securely with enterprise systems (SAP, Salesforce, ServiceNow, MES/LIMS/ELN/QMS).
- Produce technical design documentation, SOP contributions, and architecture artifacts supporting AI/automation initiatives.
- Advise on, configure, and provision infrastructure for AI, ML, and automation workloads.
- Promote adoption of agentic AI, ML, and automation technologies across engineering operations.
- Stay current with emerging AI and automation technologies and provide technical recommendations.
Collaboration, Communication & Workflow Optimization
- Communicate effectively across all departments to ensure the successful flow of software engineering information.
- Define and implement electronic systems and workflows that increase software engineering efficiency.
- Support end users by providing documentation, tools, and ongoing technical assistance.
- Collaborate proactively with cross-functional teams and maintain active participation in all NTC and AI program meetings.
Additional Responsibilities for All Discipline Managers:
- Manage and allocate engineering resources in support of each roadmap maintained by every Team Director.
- Conduct quarterly reviews for each contributor, evaluating agreed tasks, ad hoc tasks, communication, quality, and mentoring.
- Obtain accurate hourly completion estimates for each quarterly task on the Team Director’s roadmap.
- Implement Clifton Strengths assessments and apply results to team development and resource planning.
Required Education and Experience:
- 5–10+ years of manufacturing engineering leadership experience.
- Experience managing individual contributors or prior Team Lead experience.
- Bachelor of Science degree in Software Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field. Degree must be ABET accredited.
- Experience in automotive or trailer manufacturing highly preferred.
- Demonstrated success leading complex manufacturing or engineering processes with evolving work content.
- Strong client-centric approach. Experience developing people and organizational capability.
- Exceptional organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Professional written and verbal communication abilities.
- High emotional intelligence including empathy, accountability, and resilience.
- Self-starter comfortable navigating ambiguity and leading through change. Optimistic, solution-oriented mindset.
- Proficiency with SolidWorks, ERP systems, and standard business tools (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
Physical Demands:
- Ability to stand and sit for extended periods.
- Manual dexterity to operate office equipment.
- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
Working Environment:
- Professional office environment with regular interaction with guests, clients, team members, and vendors.
- Typical indoor manufacturing environment. Noise level is usually moderate. Safety glasses and closed-toe shoes are required when on the production floor.
- Everyday workwear must be business casual/smart casual and appropriate for the office environment.
- Subject to temperatures fluctuations if/when job duties require time on the production floor.
- Expected to maintain a professional image and demeanor on company property and while representing the company off-site.
