The Software Engineer is a fundamental technical contributor in the organization who is responsible for supporting the development and maintenance of software solutions. They are developing and building the applications and systems that run the company. This could be the backend systems, the frontend user experience, the products, or the tools to keep the business running. They work under the supervision of more senior software engineers and contribute to the technical direction of the software engineering department. The impact they should have on the company is to deliver high-quality software products that meet the needs of customers while developing their technical skills and knowledge. They should have a keen focus on learning and professional development, as well as a willingness to collaborate and communicate effectively with colleagues and stakeholders. Additionally, we expect every Software Engineer to actively learn and apply agentic AI coding tools — treating AI as a primary collaborator — and to develop the judgment to critically evaluate AI-generated output for quality, correctness, and security.Responsibilities:
Performance Outcomes
Performance Outcome: Development of Products or Systems
The Software Engineer is an early career engineer who is learning the tools and processes for developing quality software at scale. They are still developing expertise in an initial area of the development process (e.g., frontend, backend, IBM i). Within an area this may be limited to one or two approaches. They can contribute to the design and architecture of the system but are typically following the lead of others. The Software Engineer will focus on an individual component of a product or system. They will be learning how this system interacts with other components. Their work will largely be focused on individual tasks and tickets. They will think about features mostly within the current sprint. They will largely work from tickets and tasks as assigned by their team leads, focusing on efficiency and learning the development process along the way.
Individual tasks include:
o Develop and maintain backend systems on IBM i using RPG, SQLRPGLE, and CLP
o Integrate IBM i applications with relational databases (DB2 for i) and enterprise systems
o Understanding of SQL-based data access patterns
o Deliver reliable, tested code including unit tests and contributions to CI/CD pipelines
o Track defects, resolutions, and bug fixes to support quality software delivery
o Learn and apply agentic AI coding tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude Code) under senior guidance and develop the discipline to critically review AI-generated output before committing
o Collaborate with fellow engineers, product managers, and QA across teams
o Engage in ongoing personal study of modern technologies and industry-related knowledge and skills, including staying current on AI-assisted development practices
Performance Outcome: Engagement and Collaboration
The Software Engineer will work intricately with their teammates and may also collaborate with neighboring teams' software engineers, product managers, and others. They will welcome and seek opportunities to learn and grow from more senior engineers as they also continue to develop their skills.
Engagement responsibilities include:
o Work closely and effectively with teammates, which may include fellow software engineers, program/product managers, software test engineers, and others
o Contribute to the implementation of dynamic requirements/initiatives with teammates, cross-team collaborators
o Participate in daily team stand-ups, sprint planning, engineering guilds
o Share on-call/escalation responsibilities with your team
Education, Knowledge, and Experience
o 0-5 years of industry experience in software engineering
o Degree in computer science or related field, or equivalent industry or training experience
o Coding proficiency:
o For backend-focused IBM i software engineers: Foundational knowledge of RPG, SQLRPGLE, and/or CLP for IBM i
o Experience with modern web or backend technologies (Node.js, C#/.NET) is a plus but not required.
o Attributes:
o A growth mindset with eagerness to deepen IBM i skills and learn modern integration patterns
o Demonstrated interest in learning and applying agentic AI coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, GitHub Copilot) to accelerate development
o Ability to critically evaluate AI-generated code for correctness, quality, and security — never accepting output without review
o Ability to work well with other engineers in a collaborative environment
o Attention to detail and quality
o Open-minded approach to new ideas and approaches
o Willingness to challenge others and be challenged
o Share in the goal of creating the best design and architecture possible
