Role Overview
The Software Engineer independently delivers well-engineered code using established best practices, with the ability and willingness to pick up new languages, frameworks, and tools as the team's needs evolve. This is a foundational hands-on engineering role — building features, writing tests, managing version control, contributing to cloud/DevOps tasks with guidance, and using AI-assisted tools responsibly to support day-to-day development work.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Work
Apply OOP/SOLID principles, design patterns, and common data structures & algorithms with minimal supervision.
Apply basic concurrency/parallel programming concepts under supervision, and foundational secure programming concepts.
Learn new languages, libraries, and frameworks as needed; build a good understanding of the SaaS/PaaS solutions the team relies on.
Use foundational design patterns and reference architectures, seeking senior support as needed; interpret functional and non-functional requirements to complete tasks with minimal rework.
Use Sysco-approved AI coding assistants for code generation, debugging, and refactoring, always validating AI-generated output before committing; understand foundational AI integration patterns and contribute to related implementations.
Delivery, Quality & Operations
Manage code branches and versioned components comfortably; operate independently within the team's chosen project management methodology.
Implement code quality best practices and adjust existing code to meet standards without breaking functionality; write effective unit tests and understand the goals of integration and end-to-end testing.
Conduct root cause analysis and resolve straightforward production issues independently; navigate approved monitoring tools (e.g., DataDog, AWS CloudWatch) to monitor applications, including AI-integrated components.
Contribute to foundational DevOps tasks (CI/CD, configuration/secret management, infrastructure) and cloud implementations/PoCs (AWS/GCP/Azure) with guidance; stay aware of approved vulnerability detection tooling and cloud AI service usage guidelines.
Use AI tools to assist in writing tests and flagging code quality issues, validating AI-generated output for correctness and coverage.
People & Stakeholder Management
Communicate clearly and constructively, verbally and in writing; actively participate in project meetings and sprint ceremonies.
Estimate assigned tasks accurately and participate in team-level estimation/planning; stay aware of what teammates are working on and step up to support when advised by seniors.
Actively contribute to brainstorming sessions and research answers to technical questions independently; stay current on industry and AI trends through discussions and forums.
Use AI assistance responsibly for written communication and documentation; proactively explore how AI tools can improve personal productivity and share learnings with the team.
Requirements
Technical Skills
Solid grounding in OOP/SOLID principles, design patterns, and data structures & algorithms.
Working knowledge of foundational secure programming and data privacy concepts.
Comfortable with version control, branching strategies, and CI/CD basics.
Familiarity with at least one cloud platform (AWS/GCP/Azure) and willingness to contribute to cloud/DevOps tasks with guidance.
Experience using AI coding assistants for development tasks, with the judgment to validate AI-generated output before use.
Leadership & Soft Skills
Strong verbal and written communication; comfortable participating actively in agile ceremonies.
Reliable task estimation and self-management within a defined project methodology.
A proactive, independent learning mindset with willingness to research and self-improve.
Experience & Education
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
More than one year of professional software engineering experience.
