Job Description

Old Mutual Corporate IT is seeking a highly motivated Software Engineer to design, build, implement, and support scalable software solutions that enable business growth, operational excellence, and exceptional customer experience. The successful candidate will work within agile engineering teams to develop high-quality software solutions, contribute to technical design, and support continuous improvement across the software development lifecycle.

Key ResponsibilitiesSoftware Development
  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain software applications and services.
  • Translate business and technical requirements into secure, scalable, and maintainable solutions.
  • Participate in coding, peer reviews, testing, deployment, and production support activities.
  • Apply engineering best practices, coding standards, and appropriate design patterns throughout the SDLC.
Solution Design and Architecture
  • Participate in technical design sessions and contribute to architecture decisions.
  • Ensure solutions align with enterprise architecture, security, integration, and quality standards.
  • Assist in designing APIs, system integrations, data exchange mechanisms, and reusable components.
  • Identify technical risks, dependencies, and opportunities to simplify or modernise solutions.
Analysis and Business Engagement
  • Analyse business requirements and assess technical feasibility, complexity, and delivery impact.
  • Collaborate with product owners, business analysts, architects, testers, operations teams, and business stakeholders.
  • Provide delivery estimates, clarify assumptions, and support backlog refinement and sprint planning.
  • Contribute to clear technical documentation, operational handover material, and knowledge-sharing artefacts.
Operational Support and Reliability
  • Monitor production systems and support incident resolution, service restoration, and root-cause analysis.
  • Implement sustainable fixes to improve system reliability, maintainability, and performance.
  • Participate in system upgrades, maintenance, platform optimisation, and environment support.
  • Ensure solutions meet agreed service levels, governance expectations, and operational control requirements.
Quality Engineering and DevOps
  • Develop and maintain automated tests where appropriate, including unit, integration, and regression tests.
  • Promote strong code quality, test coverage, secure coding, and technical debt reduction.
  • Support CI/CD pipelines, deployment automation, version control, and release management practices.
  • Contribute to observability, logging, monitoring, and production-readiness improvements.
Innovation and Continuous Improvement
  • Identify opportunities for automation, process improvement, AI use, and engineering efficiency.
  • Keep up to date with emerging technologies, cloud-native patterns, and modern engineering practices including the use of AI.
  • Contribute to communities of practice and support the growth of engineering capability across teams.
  • Demonstrate curiosity, accountability, and continuous learning in a changing technology environment.

Minimum Requirements for this role:

  • Degree or diploma in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering or related technology discipline coupled with relevant industry certifications.
  • 5-10 years software engineering experience, including delivery of enterprise-scale solutions and participation in Agile Delivery environments.
  • Cloud-native development experience (advantageous)
  • Knowledge of Old Mutual Corporate Systems (advantageous)

Technical Skills required :

  • Development - C#, .NET, Python, JavaScript / TypeScript, Node.js
  • Front-End Dev - Blazor, React, HTML5, CSS3, Next JS
  • Cloud & Platform - AWS, Docker, Windows Server environments.
  • Data - SQL Server, data integration & ETL technologies.
  • Engineering Practices - Azure DevOps, CI/CD, API Development, microservices, event-driven architecture.
  • Security & Governance - Secure coding, secrets management, access control, auditability, resilience, and compliance-aware delivery.
