Velera is the nation’s premier payments credit union service organization (CUSO) and an integrated fintech solutions provider. The company serves more than 4,000 financial institutions throughout North America, operating with velocity to help our clients keep pace with the rapid momentum of change and fuel growth in the new era of financial services. Our purpose: We accelerate partners’ success through innovative financial technology solutions and inspired service.
The Opportunity
Velera is hiring a Software Engineer III who will serve as a technical leader for a newly formed Agile product delivery team. This is a senior, hands-on engineering role for an individual who brings strong software engineering maturity, technical judgment, and a clear desire to lead, mentor, and elevate others. This position is well suited for an engineer who is innately curious about technology, applies creativity to engineering problems, and actively looks for ways to improve architecture, delivery practices, developer experience, and system quality.
You will contribute across a mix of new product development, modernization initiatives, and ongoing maintenance within a regulated payments environment where security, reliability, and auditability matter. The core technical direction is C# / .NET / .NET Core on Azure, with modern front-end development centered on TypeScript-based frameworks.
Day in the Life:
Work in a fast-paced Agile environment where you will:
- Design, build, test, maintain, and support secure, scalable, and reliable software solutions for payments and related platform capabilities.
- Serve as the team’s technical leader by guiding solution design, driving strong engineering practices, and helping the team deliver high-quality software consistently.
- Contribute hands-on across backend, APIs, integrations, data, and UI work as needed.
- Partner with product, architecture, engineering leadership, and adjacent teams to turn business needs into practical technical solutions.
- Mentor other engineers through code reviews, design collaboration, technical coaching, and day-to-day leadership.
- Help raise the team’s engineering maturity in areas such as code quality, automated testing, CI/CD, documentation, operational readiness, and secure software development.
- Ensure solutions align with regulatory, audit, risk, and security expectations in a financial technology environment.
- Participate fully in Agile delivery and support production operations, troubleshooting, on-call needs, and continuous improvement.
What You’ll Build With (Technology Snapshot)
Velera values engineers who are grounded in a primary stack but comfortable working across modern technologies as solutions evolve.
- Core backend: C#, .NET / .NET Core, Azure
- Modern application development: TypeScript-based technologies across front-end and service layers (e.g., React, Node.js)
- APIs & integration: RESTful APIs and service-oriented integration patterns
- Data: SQL-based databases (Oracle and/or MS SQL)
- DevOps: Azure DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, automation-first mindset
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 7+ years of professional software engineering experience building and delivering production-grade applications.
- Demonstrated experience serving as a senior engineer, technical leader, or subject matter expert on a software delivery team.
- Strong experience with .NET / C# / .NET Core and API development.
- Experience with modern frontend development, with preference for React.
- Experience with one or more additional modern languages or runtimes such as Node.js / TypeScript.
- Strong experience designing and building RESTful APIs and integrating with enterprise systems.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals, including object-oriented design, data structures, algorithms, and clean coding practices.
- Experience reviewing code and designs for quality, maintainability, performance, and security.
- Strong database experience, including writing and optimizing SQL and working with relational databases such as SQL Server and/or Oracle.
- Experience working in Agile teams and contributing to iterative delivery.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to influence technical direction through collaboration.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers and help elevate team performance.
Preferred Experience:
- 3+ years of experience in a technical lead, team lead, or similar engineering leadership role.
- Experience building applications in Azure cloud environments.
- Experience with Azure DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, and modern DevOps practices.
- Experience with microservices, distributed systems, and event-driven or integration-heavy architectures.
- Experience with Angular and modernizing UI architectures toward React.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform.
- Experience with micro frontends or other scalable frontend architecture patterns.
- Experience in financial services, payments, fintech, or other regulated environments.
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools to improve engineering productivity and quality.
You Might Be a Great Fit If...
- You enjoy leading technical direction while staying hands-on.
- You care about building stronger teams, not just shipping code.
- You look for better ways to solve problems and improve how work gets done.
- You can work effectively across modern platforms while navigating existing enterprise systems where needed.
- You bring sound judgment, curiosity, and a practical modernization mindset.
