The Opportunity 

With the Installer app installing and maintaining thousands of devices a week, we need an Android Engineer III who can support and improve our mobile application.  Flock also plans to bring multiple new devices to market, each with their own customized installation processes, which will live in this application.  This opportunity is perfect for a talented android developer who has consumer empathy and wants to work on a project that will directly impact Flock’s growth metrics and ultimate success.

The Skillset 

• Proficient with Android native apps in Kotlin

• Knowledge of Jetpack Compose is a plus

• Experience working with IoT technologies (wifi, bluetooth)

• Experience with modern Android architecture patterns

• A proven ability to build prototypes and take a data-driven approach to product development, testing and measuring new ideas very quickly

• Consumer empathy, desire and ability to understand the world the Technicians live in and how to improve it

90 Days at Flock

This serves as a preview of the 90 day plan you will receive if you were to be hired as a Software Engineer Flock Safety. 

The First 30 Days

• Day 1 Impact: You will be busy onboarding today but we always like to have each employee have a “first day push of code.” It doesn’t have to be perfect and it doesn’t have to be huge, just important to start and finish something quickly.

• Understand current processes and procedures;

• Review PR practices

• Walkthrough of Installer app

• Asking questions in a public way to spread knowledge; i.e. public slack channels, update READMEs.

The First 60 Days 

• Ability to perform role with decreased need for guidance;

  • Take ownership of tasks

  • Come up with options of solutions instead of “what should I do?”

• Able to complete medium sized tasks with little support;

  • Contribute work in small shippable chunks 

  • Smaller PRs are preferred!

• High level understanding of the features we are working on

• Manage a release of the Installer app

• Participate and comment on PRs

• Understand the software design philosophies being used;

• Be comfortable navigating through the code base;

• Engaged during technical conversation to increase quality of input;

• Contribute to pointing stories in refinement;

• Start monitoring of logs and dashboards

90 Days & Beyond 

• Ability to perform role with little guidance with transparency;

• Be comfortable picking up engineering tasks of larger size and more ambiguity;

• Communicating across multiple teams to solve problems efficiently;

• Contribute ideas in Design Reviews and Refinements, for how we build better software

• Contributing valuable feedback in PR reviews

• Participate in software engineering demo day by presenting a topic that you worked on in the last few months.

Salary & Equity

In this role, you’ll receive a starting salary of $142,000-$180,000 as well as stock options. Base salary is determined by job-related experience, education/training, as well as market indicators. Your recruiter will discuss this in-depth with you during our first chat.
