About the role

As a Software Engineer II on the Android Team, you will contribute to the development and optimization of Crunchyroll's Android platform across mobile, Android TV, Fire TV, and automotive apps. You will take ownership of key features and improvements, ensuring high-quality code, performance, and user experience. You'll collaborate with Engineering, Product, Design, and Program Management to deliver scalable and reliable solutions that delight millions of anime fans. You'll be a part of an international team of 100+ client engineers, where your contributions help maintain Crunchyroll's position as the premier anime streaming service.

  • Contribute to the design and implementation of Android features that enhance our streaming apps across supported platforms.
  • Collaborate on solutions that improve code maintainability, user experience, and overall app performance.
  • Identify technical debt, performance bottlenecks, or reliability issues, and work with engineering leadership and your team to address them.
  • Maintain high standards for code quality and engineering best practices across the Android stack.
  • Participate in design discussions and code reviews, contributing to a strong team culture of technical excellence.
  • Support operational excellence through sustainable on-call practices and a focus on reducing long-term toil.
  • Stay current with industry trends, tools, and best practices in Android development to ensure our apps remain competitive and modern.

This is a hybrid role (3 days per week in the office) that reports to an engineering manager in the Fan Experience Engineering Organization. We are considering applicants for the Mexico City location.

Core Areas of Responsibility
  • Implement Android features that directly impact the Crunchyroll user experience across multiple platforms.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally in technical solutions to align with product goals and customer needs.
  • Be responsible for feature development as an owner, with a focus on quality, performance, and scalability.
  • Contribute to team operations, including code reviews, on-call support, and technical planning.
  • Continuously seek opportunities to improve engineering practices, reduce tech debt, and enhance development efficiency.
About You

  • You have 2+ years of experience developing Android applications using Kotlin.
  • You have hands-on experience building production apps with Jetpack libraries such as Compose.
  • You have a working knowledge of testing frameworks like Espresso and understand the value of unit, integration, and E2E testing.
  • You are familiar with Android architecture patterns and have applied them to create maintainable and scalable codebases.
  • You have contributed to consumer-facing mobile applications at scale, ideally with multimedia or streaming experiences.
  • You have experience debugging complex issues and navigating large, modular codebases using established engineering best practices.
  • You possess a strong grasp of Git workflows and are comfortable working in modern CI/CD practices.
  • You are familiar with Agile methodologies and working within a cross-functional team setup.
  • You have participated in an on-call rotation and understand what it means to build resilient systems that reduce operational burden over time.
  • You are test-driven and have experience using agentic tools to enhance development efficiency.
