About the Job:
We are looking for a Software Engineer who values creativity and user experience as much as great code and curiosity. As a Software Engineer at Rent the Runway, you will work with an enthusiastic team of engineers focused on the customer journey across multiple devices and surfaces. You’ll build world-class experiences for an eager and passionate customer base, from their first visit to their first order! Our team works in an agile environment, building high-quality, performant software while solving high-impact and complex problems!
What You’ll Do:
- Participate in all aspects of agile software development, including design, implementation, and deployment
- You will utilize AI tools for code generation, debugging, documentation, etc.
- You’ll build intuitive and well-tested APIs for manipulating & retrieving data.
- You will optimize for performance and scalability.
- Drive technical projects to success in a fast-paced startup environment.
- Deepen your knowledge and build your skills across our technology stack: ReactJS, Next.js, React-testing-library, Java/Kotlin, MySQL, Mongo, RabbitMQ, Spring Boot, Splunk, Splunk Cloud, SignalFX.
- You’ll deprecate and remove functionality & services that no longer suit our needs.
- Contribute technically to projects by being a hands-on coder and removing roadblocks.
- Assist in prioritisation efforts, planning future roadmaps, and provide mentorship to others.
About You:
- BA/BS in Computer Science, a related degree, or equivalent practical experience.
- You have hands-on, production-level experience across significant parts of our technology stack:
- Frontend: ReactJS, Next.js.
- Backend: Java, Kotlin, SpringBoot, RabbitMQ, MySQL, MongoDB.
- You have experience and enthusiasm for testing, test-driven development, and building reliable systems.
- You are proficient with and excited to leverage AI tools in day-to-day development tasks such as code generation, debugging, and documentation.
- You have a strong command of best practices, design patterns, and system architecture tradeoffs.
- You can hit the ground running and quickly familiarize yourself with an existing codebase and toolset.
- You have experience with distributed system performance analysis and optimisation.
- You can understand, diagnose, and articulate technical challenges and solutions effectively.
- You have a high level of comfort navigating ambiguity and making the tradeoffs without compromising quality.
- You're a collaborative partner who thrives in a cross-functional environment, working closely with product, design, and engineers across various tech stacks to build cohesive, high-impact solutions.
AI/LLM Proficiency
- You are proficient in deploying a diverse stack of LLMs (ChatGPT, Claude) and AI-native IDEs (Cursor, Windsurf, Copilot) to automate and elevate professional workstreams.
- You have expertise in prompt engineering, focusing on high-density context provision to minimise hallucinations and maximise model accuracy.
- You are skilled in defining AI behaviour through structured system prompts and custom agent configurations for predictable, high-quality output.
- You have a deep understanding of the AI ecosystem, including Model Context Protocol (MCP), API connectors, and the design of autonomous agentic loops.
- You can proactively identify high-impact areas for AI integration to drive measurable gains in operational efficiency and output volume.

The anticipated base salary for this position is $92,000 to $110,000. The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held.
