This is a hybrid position with time split between office-based and remote working from one of the following countries: Germany (Berlin or Munich) or the UK (London).

As a Lead Engineer, you will elevate the teams you work with by improving the quality of their technical solutions, operational excellence, and overall ability to deliver fast, impactful results. All Lead Engineers at Personio are hands-on coders who thrive in high-output environments and want to make a real impact. You’ll be working on a mix of improving existing features and building exciting new ones that our customers will love. Depending on the stage of the product, you’ll either be coding or solving complex problems that pave the way for future development. When you’re not coding, you’ll be focused on simplifying and enhancing the customer experience. We're all about creating exceptional products and delivering outstanding customer satisfaction!

Role Responsibilities

• Build Reliable and Performant Solutions: Lead the delivery of large, consistent and scalable Design System. Build, maintain, and improve the organization’s design system, including reusable UI components, patterns, and guidelines

• Collaboration: Partner with DS and Product designers in building high-quality, reusable components and experiences. Work closely with frontend engineers to integrate design system components into applications seamlessly.

• Hands-On Development: Coding (this is a high code output environment), designing systems, and architecting solutions that are reliable and high-performing.

• Estimating, Scoping, and Planning: Own the estimation, scoping, and planning of projects, helping define the team's strategy and roadmap. Work closely with product management, leadership, and engineering teams to deliver impactful workstreams.

• Standards, Tooling and Documentation: Keep a keen eye for accessibility standards. Build and maintain tools to streamline component usage and updates (we use Storybooks extensively). Document usage guides, examples etc for easier consumption by teams

• Mentoring and Coaching: Actively mentor and coach engineers, sharing knowledge and driving team topics. Promote a culture of support and collaboration to increase team productivity and growth.

• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Build strong relationships with cross-functional teams, including product management and leadership, to drive the success of engineering initiatives. Participate in interviewing and hiring to contribute to the growth and success of the team.

• Operational Leadership: Ensure operational excellence across the product lifecycle, driving incident management and continuous improvement. Enhance monitoring, observability, and team productivity.

Role Requirements

Technical Expertise: Proficiency in React, Javascript, HTML standards and CSS required

Others: Proficiency with version control tools - we use Gitlab, working knowledge of Figma

Operational Excellence: Skilled in implementing various testing strategies (RTL, Playwright and Chromatic for VRT). Ensuring technical strategies are effectively translated into reality. Demonstrated experience in managing operational quality and incident response, with a focus on continuous improvement.

Leadership and Mentorship: Proven ability to mentor and coach engineers, amplifying their technical abilities and enabling the team to succeed. Strong written and spoken communication skills are essential.
