You will be part of a team responsible for building out the newest eBay experience -- live shopping platform: eBay Live. Live shopping naturally fits into the eBay ethos -- focused largely on unique items, collectibles and fashion, and enabling direct communication between buyers and sellers. This is a relatively new trend in the US and Europe, growing quickly, and is already broadly established in APAC.

We are looking to hire a passionate, collaborative and motivated Backend Software Engineer, who will help us develop and evolve eBay Live to be a market leader in live shopping and become a key part of the global eBay platform.

What you'll do and learn:
  • Develop features and services in highly scalable and reliable frontend and/or backend systems in a distributed system environment.
  • Able to translate product and design documents into clean, high-quality, well-tested and maintainable production code autonomously
  • Write test automations and practice continuous integration
  • Conduct code review for immediate team
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation to support software applications.
  • Practices evidence-centered design making features testable, ensuring high quality and improving velocity in continuous delivery.
  • Accountable for multiple subsystems within a larger domain, taking full responsibility for their entire life cycle, including design, development, testing, deployment, observability and monitoring.
  • Propose and evaluate multiple design options, providing estimates for each.
  • Structure and complete tasks independently, meeting deadlines and milestones.
  • Effectively communicate assumptions and seek clarification from stakeholders, ensuring alignment and understanding across all domains.
  • Lead engineering support, release, and on-call responsibilities for an "always-on" 24/7 site.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in EE, CS or other related field.

  • 4+ years of experience in working in Java, GraphQL, Spring/Springboot, REST APIs, messaging systems and/or other backend programming languages. 

  • Strong CS foundation (data structures, algorithms, OOPs, OOA/D) 

  • Building data-driven applications (RDBMS, NoSQL, ElasticSearch) 

  • Designs and builds scalable, distributed, available back-end systems 

  • Experience designing and developing microservices 

  • Delivers results in fast-paced environments (agile, TDD, CI/CD) 

Preferred Experience:
  • Experience building real time, user facing systems (e.g., live streaming, chat, bidding, collaboration tools, gaming, or financial trading) where latency and errors materially impact user trust and outcomes.
  • Background working on high traffic, event driven products (launches, flash sales, live events) with an understanding of infrastructure capacity planning, traffic spikes, and graceful degradation under load.
  • Lead root-cause analysis and implement long-term fixes across platform to eliminate recurring issues and continuously elevate the customer experience.
  • Websocket and FGQL experience a plus.

The base pay range for this position is expected in the range below:

$147,200 - $196,500

Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including location, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a target bonus and restricted stock units (as applicable) in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as PTO and parental leave). Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.

If hired, employees will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
