The Role

Software Development Engineer in Test - Software Principal Engineer (I8) - Austin US

We’re involved in the whole testing process from preparing test and diagnostic programs to recommending changes in testing equipment procedures and designing new testing equipment.

What you’ll achieve
As a SDET - Software Principal Engineer, you will be responsible for developing sophisticated systems and software basis the customer’s business goals, needs and general business environment creating software solutions. Work in a team that is architecting and qualifying the next generation, cutting edge Remote System Management Software. The solution allows Dell's customers to remotely provision Server HW/FW from barebones and deploy them as production ready infrastructure in mere minutes.  In this role, you will have the opportunity to use the latest server, firmware, networking, and storage technologies to qualify integrated, streamlined solutions that are best in class.

Responsibilities:

  • Conceptualize and optimize power and thermal management systems for enterprise servers.
  • Perform thermal simulations and analysis to ensure efficient heat dissipation and cooling solutions. Architects test and diagnostic programs, designs test fixtures and test tools, and completes validation specifications and procedures for new and changes to existing products.
  • Authors and presents to leadership innovative test process and methodology improvements from an end-to-end test perspective for the functional area of ownership. Works with developers and technologists to develop automation and test tools for functional areas.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including hardware, software, and mechanical engineers, to integrate power and thermal solutions into server designs.
  • Responsible for the strategy, design and development activities associated with methods for validating System Management Software, Server, Firmware, and broader solutions, focused on Dell's Remote Management Controller for Servers. Validation plans include test cases and test scripts, project requirements, schedule assumptions, and scope that align with the development and marketing expectations.

The ideal candidate will be a test professional that combines subject matter expertise, industry experience, customer expectation and understanding of product development methodologies to significantly contribute to business results through quality of results, advice, and decisions. The ability to formulate validation strategy primarily focused on automation is a primary facet of the role.

Essential Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of programming languages; operating systems; firmware; iDRAC, BMC Controller; OpenBMC, device drivers; databases; system, network, operating system, and application administration; embedded software/firmware; tools and utilities
  • Strong knowledge of thermal simulation tools (e.g., CFD software) and power management techniques.
  • Ability to code/debug and guide others to code/debug flexible, scalable and complex programs, using either written or verbal design specifications
  • Experience with multiple programming languages, databases, operating systems, tools and hardware platforms
  • Ability to define and document how a specific Software Lifecycle and Quality Assurance method will be used for specific projects

Desirable Requirements

  • Typically requires 8+ years of related experience in a professional role with a Bachelor’s degree or 6+ years with a Master’s degree;
  • Evaluates cognitive-based, time-consuming tasks on a regular basis for their automation opportunity through Analytics or AI-based techniques
  • 5+ years’ experience with iterative development methodologies including Agile/SCRUM, TDD.
  • 5+ years’ experience developing test automation using Python, Perl, XML, C, C++

Compensation

Dell is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The salary range for this position is $153k - $198k.
