The Software Developer will support the Texas Department of Public Safety (TxDPS). This role oversees the coding, testing, and debugging of programs against technical and functional requirements, while leading research and analysis for project proposals, software modifications, and new development initiatives. The position involves analyzing proposed computer applications for equipment requirements and capabilities, evaluating database schemas, and troubleshooting application issues through log and system analysis. The role also includes coordinating programming projects, developing standards for programming staff, and maintaining backup and restore processes to support business continuity. Responsibilities
- Oversee the coding, testing, and debugging of programs as outlined by a system's technical and functional requirements, and oversee the preparation of test data.
- Oversee and/or prepare flowcharts and diagrams to support development efforts.
- Oversee and/or prepare instructions for use during production runs, and coordinate the development of instructions or manuals for end users.
- Lead and coordinate research and analysis required for project proposals, software and systems modifications, and new projects.
- Analyze proposed computer applications in terms of equipment requirements and capabilities; evaluate database schemas, write and run SQL code, and deploy packages and triggers.
- Review and revise programs to increase operating efficiency or to adapt new procedures.
- Analyze logs, system messages, thread connectivity, memory utilization, disk input/output, and disk space to troubleshoot application issues.
- Confer with staff members to schedule work and coordinate programming projects.
- Develop standards and procedures for programming staff and related interfaces and reports.
- Recommend, coordinate, and implement changes to improve application and overall system performance.
- Create and maintain backup and restore processes to ensure business continuity.
- Coordinate, assign, and track the work of others.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications - Candidates must meet all minimum qualifications
- 15 years of Java experience.
- 10 years of SQL database experience.
- 8 years of sustaining and development experience in support of large applications in a team environment.
- 5 years of Linux experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- 8 years of experience with the Atlassian tool suite, especially JIRA.
- 8 years of experience with Agile methodology.
- 2 years of experience with State of Texas applications, including experience with the Texas Department of Public Safety environment.
- 2 years of experience transitioning applications from legacy mainframe environments to a Java/SQL environment.
Additional Requirements
- Local candidates only; must currently live within 50 miles of the Austin, Texas work location.
- Candidate must attend work regularly and observe approved work hours in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.
- May be required to work outside normal business hours, including weekends, evenings, and holidays, as requested.
Work Location and Schedule
Location: 5805 N. Lamar Blvd, Austin, TX 78752
Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, excluding State holidays
