Job Description:

The Trade Finance Senior Specialist (East) is part of the Global Operations team (Houston, London, Singapore and Manila) within the Trade Finance function. The Senior Specialist acts as the primary contact within the Global Trading &Supply (T&S) Credit organization for executing credit mitigation strategies such as standby letters of credit and bank guarantees whereby credit risk passes from Shell T&S entities to third parties (generally financial institutions). Directly interfaces with external counterparties, Global T&S Credit team, commercial and finance stakeholders to support transactions and ensures that appropriate financial instruments are in place to manage credit risk.

Apart from the day-to-day activities, the role is envisioned to strengthen support and knowledge across the team through conduct of letter of credit reviews, develop robust training plans and learning programs, and perform oversight role. The SS is expected to drive projects that are geared towards simplification and standardization where deemed appropriate. This role creates the opportunity to further define the Global Trading Credit Organization particularly in the new Trading & Supply world while we look to continually innovate and define best credit solutions to support the dynamic and fast-paced Trading and Supply business.

Accountabilities:

  • The Senior Specialist handles the part of the East Trade Finance Team’s first level of escalation, interfacing directly with counterparties, Global T&S Credit team, commercial, compliance and finance stakeholders advising on the relevant credit risk mitigation instruments.

  • Together with Senior Team Manager, oversees day-to-day Trade Finance operations ensuring all SLC/BG validated are acceptable and enforceable. Also monitors overdues and potential claims and responds accordingly.

  • Acts as the team SME and directly oversees knowledge transfers/ training, workload assignments and leads the resolution of process related issues.

  • Develops robust quality assurance checks and embeds it within the processes.

  • Undertakes CI/digital projects aimed to standardize, simplify, and automate the process globally as applicable.

  • Work with credit team to settle complex disputes on security clauses with counterparties.

  • Other accountabilities that may be assigned to a Trade Finance Specialist (desk assignments when needed).

Skills and Requirements:

  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to communicate complicated ideas in a clear and uncomplicated manner

  • Experience in reviewing/approving standby letters of credit, bank guarantees or documentary letters of credit, preferably in a bank setting required.

  • minimum of 3 years experience in Trade Finance / Understanding of UCP 600, ISBP 98 and or URDG is required.

  • Ability to carry out tasks, projects and resolve issues with very minimal supervision

  • Open to different perspectives (i.e. from other businesses & locations) and be able to switch priorities at short notice.

  • Ability to work under pressure, working on tight deadlines and juggling multiple priorities

  • Externally focused and maintains good, long-term relationships with counterparties and other external financial institutions to ensure Shell Trading maintains the right external image and engagements with these bodies’ results in positive outcomes.

  • Learner mindset. The ability to provide and receive constructive feedback.

  • Demonstrate a firm grasp of the key commercial considerations, as well as an ability to weigh up and decide on the risks of each activity. The ability to know when to escalate is essential.

  • Keep connected with the other teams within and outside Credit as appropriate, to ensure the team understands emerging challenges the location-based teams are facing and can re-prioritize effort as required.
