Overview of the role
The SMSF Accountant is responsible for the preparation, administration, and compliance of Self-Managed Superannuation Funds (SMSFs) in accordance with Australian superannuation and taxation laws. This role requires a strong understanding of SMSF legislation, tax compliance and financial reporting.
Main duties include:
SMSF Compliance & Administration
- Prepare annual financial statements for SMSFs, including operating statements and member balances.
- Complete and lodge SMSF annual returns (SAR) with the ATO.
- Ensure compliance with the Superannuation Industry (Supervision) Act (SIS Act) and regulations.
- Maintain accurate fund records, including trust deeds, investment strategies, and minutes.
- Monitor contribution caps, pension requirements, and minimum drawdowns.
- Prepare business activity statements quarterly
- Prepare detailed workpapers to reconcile the SMSF Financial Statements for Audit purposes
Taxation & Reporting
- Prepare SMSF tax calculations and ensure timely lodgement.
- Manage GST, PAYG, and other relevant tax obligations where applicable.
Investment & Transaction Processing
- Record and reconcile investment transactions including shares, property, managed funds, and alternative assets.
- Ensure proper classification and valuation of investments.
- Review and reconcile bank accounts, broker statements, and other financial data.
Regulatory Updates & Continuous Improvement
- Stay up to date with changes in superannuation and tax legislation.
- Suggest process improvements to enhance efficiency and compliance.
- Assist with internal training and knowledge sharing.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- CA, CPA, or progress towards professional qualification.
- Minimum 2–5 years’ experience in SMSF accounting or public practice.
- Strong knowledge of Australian superannuation legislation and tax law.
- Experience with Class 360 SMSF software.
- Experience with Xero Practice Manager and FYI Docs (not essential)
- High attention to detail and strong analytical skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
