POSITION SUMMARY
The Skip Tracer at RAS LaVrar plays a critical role in the firm’s creditors’ rights practice by locating borrowers to facilitate the recovery of assets and the service of legal process. Reporting to the Production Manager, this role is responsible for conducting a deep-dive search for a consumer’s address and/or contact information by using a variety of sophisticated search tools and databases. By synthesizing complex data from public and private sources, the Skip Tracer ensures that the litigation and collections teams have accurate, actionable information. The position requires a high degree of persistence, investigative curiosity, and strict adherence to the regulatory frameworks governing the financial services industry.
Responsibilities and Duties:
The following responsibilities are central to the role:
Investigative Research & Data Retrieval
- Advanced Location Services: Utilize basic and advanced skip tracing tools to locate borrowers, co-signers, and assets for a high volume of legal files.
- Database Management: Navigate and search private databases, proprietary skip tracing software, and various public records (e.g., property tax, DMV, and voter registration) to identify current contact information.
- Digital Intelligence: Leverage the "World Wide Web," including social media platforms and professional networks, to gather supplemental information on borrower whereabouts.
- Information Verification: Rigorously verify all identified borrower information, including phone numbers, physical addresses, and place of employment, to ensure data integrity before further action is taken.
Compliance & Regulatory Oversight
- Regulatory Adherence: Execute all searches in full compliance with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), and all other applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
- Confidentiality: Maintain the highest standards of data security and confidentiality when handling sensitive consumer information and non-public personal data (NPPI).
- Reporting: Document all investigative steps and findings clearly within the firm's internal case management system (JST) to provide a transparent audit trail.

- Investigative Mindset: Exceptional ability to connect disparate data points and "follow the trail" to locate individuals who are difficult to find.
- Technical Proficiency: Mastery of industry-standard skip tracing platforms (e.g., LexisNexis, TLOxp, or Accurint) and advanced internet search techniques.
- Attention to Detail: Meticulous approach to verifying facts and figures to prevent the firm from acting on inaccurate or outdated information.
- Communication Skills: Strong verbal skills for professional communication with third parties, such as neighbors, relatives, or employers, while maintaining strict compliance with privacy laws.
- Resilience & Persistence: Demonstrated ability to remain focused and productive in a high-volume, fast-paced environment with challenging investigative targets.
Educational/ Experience Qualification:
- Education: High School Diploma or GED required; an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Legal Studies, or a related field is preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience in skip tracing, debt collection, or private investigation, preferably within a law firm or financial services environment.
- Technical Background: Prior experience navigating public record databases and a strong understanding of FDCPA/FCRA guidelines is essential.
- Attributes: A self-motivated investigator who can work independently while contributing to the overall recovery goals of the firm.
