Job Description

How will you make an impact?

We are looking for an Engineering Skill Chapter Lead within our Operations and Checkout Tech Chapter.

The teams in this chapter build the technology that keeps METRO stores running and enables customers to complete their purchases. This includes solutions for store operations, logistics and stock management, as well as checkout, payments and invoicing.

As Skill Chapter Lead, you will lead and grow a team of 30+ engineers. You will drive engineering excellence across the full lifecycle—from architecture and implementation to testing and operations—while shaping engineering standards and capabilities across the chapter. Working closely with squads, business and technology stakeholders, you will help deliver reliable, scalable solutions that support METRO's wholesale business today and shape the future of wholesale retail.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Lead, coach and develop a diverse team of 30+ engineering professionals, supporting their performance management and career growth;
  • Develop chapter strategies for future oriented capability evolution, fostering a culture of learning, collaboration and innovation;
  • Define and enforce best practices, standards, methodologies, ensuring consistent technical approaches, fostering a culture of learning, collaboration and innovation;
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to squads and platforms, contributing to design council decisions and ABR requests (incl. budget input);
  • Drive operational stability and security hardening accordingly in line with relevant technology KPIs;
  • Stay updated on industry trends and emerging technologies, enabling their adoption at METRO;
  • Contribute with technical expertise to roadmaps and strategies;
  • Ensure effective allocation of chapter members to squads based on skills and priorities;
  • Collaborate with other chapter leads, squad leads, and senior management to align on strategic initiatives and drive the success of squad business goals;
  • Manage chapter operations and administration, ensuring smooth day-to-day functioning.

Qualifications

  • University degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or another relevant field;
  • 5-8 years of work experience in engineering leadership roles, such as Engineering Manager or equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience leading engineering teams, ideally within Operations and/or Checkout domains, or in other business and technology areas with transferable leadership and technical expertise.
  • Demonstrated experience in management of topics combining business and IT needs;
  • Ability to balance strategic thinking with operational engagement - staying close to engineering teams to understand challenges and support effective outcomes;
  • Strong leadership competence with management responsibility for international teams, across different locations, with different cultural backgrounds (experience in matrix organizations is a plus);
  • Experience in defining and managing common standards and ways of working in a complex and dynamic environment;
  • Excellent communication, coaching, and stakeholder management skills;
  • Very good English language skills (written and verbal).

Skills Required
