The Device SRE team owns deployment of software to our fleet of IoT devices, as well as observability during and after deployment. This involves working in the entire stack from telemetry/event generation in the firmware, data ingestion into the cloud, visualization of data, and alarms that indicate issues. We are expanding our scope beyond Cameras to include Aviation devices. Our goal is to provide consistent infrastructure, processes, and tools across the organization that enable the development team to roll out new software rapidly and reliably, while enabling them to identify and respond to issues quickly, resulting in fast rollouts of new features with minimal downtime.

• Experience developing software for embedded systems, especially large/complex ones.

• Strong coding skills (ex: C/C++, Python, R, JS, Java, Groovy) and understanding of common algorithms

• Strong & advanced SQL skills (ex: window functions, joins)

• Proficiency in scripting languages (ex: Bash) to automate processes

• Data visualization & dashboarding (ex: Grafana, Sigma)

• Broad experience with Databases & Logging: SQL (ex: PostgreSQL), NoSQL, Time Series (ex: Prometheus, DataDog)

• Volume data processing (ingestion, pipelines, modeling, storage)

• Cloud computing (ex: AWS) & distributed systems

• Site Reliability Engineering for IoT devices (on-call, monitoring, & alerting)

• Software development workflows (ex: continuous integration, test automation, branching, semantic versioning)

• Experience with infrastructure-as-code (IaC) tools (Ansible, Terraform).

The First 30 Days

• Maintain and improve data collected from devices for monitoring fleet health.

• Improve ability to identify and root-cause issues in the fleet, including automated alarms.

• Maintain and build out dashboards that provide insight into fleet health.

• Streamline software rollout workflows and monitoring to reduce manual steps and improve response times.

• Define and build out on-call rotations for monitoring fleet health.

• Perform ad-hoc analysis of unexpected issues by analyzing data collected from the fleet.

• Participate in on-call rotations to serve as first responder for outages and general requests from stakeholders.

The First 60 Days

• Improve or create a Grafana dashboard.

• Improve or create a Sigma dashboard.

• Improve or create a piece of telemetry data or event in device firmware.

• Review the code of other engineers in GitHub and Gerrit.

• Modify infrastructure in Terraform.

• Take a crash course in the incident response protocols for Flock Safety.

• Participate in on-call rotations (initially paired with a more experienced team member).

• Discuss high level career goals and expectations with your manager.

90 Days & Beyond

• Help with any cross-team needs/dependencies.

• Contribute ideas for how we build better software, increase productivity, and deliver more value to customers.

• Implement actions that increase customer satisfaction and developer satisfaction.

• Participate in at least 3 customer calls within your first 90 days.

• Work with a field tech to do a Field Ops Ride-Along.

• Evaluate the first 90 days with your manager to highlight successes and learning opportunities.

In this role, you’ll receive a starting salary of $140,000-$160,000 as well as stock options. Base salary is determined by job-related experience, education/training, as well as market indicators. Your recruiter will discuss this in-depth with you during our first chat.
