Job Description

The Shift Leader is responsible for directing the process operators on their assigned shift, on behalf of processing operations within crush and refinery departments. The Shift Leader is required to participate in a rotational shift schedule, and must be able to work day/night shifts as assigned and scheduled.

Duties and responsibilities include: 

  • Work closely with other Shift Leaders, facility management, and onsite colleagues in a collaborative and professional manner, to ensure efficient operational running of the facility. 
  • Ensure we produce quality products in a safe and efficient manner and in compliance with government regulations and Company standards.
  • Coordinate production startup, shutdowns, and changeovers.
  • Respond to equipment issues and process alarms. Investigates and resolves problems. Conducts regular and frequent “walkthrough” of assigned processes in search of potential issues. Trains operators in proper techniques.
  • Provide thorough and clear updates to all involved parties in regards to operation of the plant. (reduced rate, stoppages, equipment malfunction).

  • Conducts quality control tests, enters data, and operates the HMI in the plant as needed to support the process operators.
  • Analyzes process data to optimize plant efficiencies and product quality as needed to support the process operators.
  • Lead the Emergency Response of any plant emergency situation. Contacts appropriate authorities as needed.
  • Call-in appropriate supervisors, maintenance, and contractors as needed to support plant operation.
  • Assist with planning the daily activities of the production staff. Issues work assignments accordingly. Serves as the liaison between plant management and production staff.
  • Ensure proper coverage by managing schedules and calling in help as needed.
  • Complete regular checks of staff and equipment throughout their shift to ensure that standard operating procedures are being followed and Company quality standards are met. Reports deviations to the department supervisor or superintendent. 
  • Provide training as needed. Enforces policy with disciplinary action if necessary.
  • Ensure that established environmental procedures are followed and recordkeeping requirements are met.
  • Assist with the routine maintenance of all assigned equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with Company safety and food safety rules by self and others. Wears proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required in fulfillment of assigned responsibilities. Enforces policy with disciplinary action.
  • Work in an organized, safe, and clean manner, ensures work areas are kept clean and free from all safety hazards.
  • Lead general sanitation and shutdown activities throughout the facility as needed.
  • Direct the unloading and loading of raw materials, intermediate, and final products as needed.
  • Operate Powered Mobile Equipment (PME) including skid steers and front-end loaders.
  • Additional duties include, but are not limited to, general responsibilities in all areas of operations, procurement, quality, health & safety, refinery, transportation, logistics, internal & external maintenance of facility.


Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Previous work experience in an industrial facility is required.

  • Previous work experience as a Supervisor or Team Lead is preferred.

  • Technical degree, post-secondary credits, or vocational training preferred

  • Experience with grain and/or grain products preferred.

  • Must have knowledge of manufacturing processes and procedures.

  • Able to climb stairs and ladders as well as work at heights; manage confined space entry, withstand extended periods of walking and standing; move manufacturing materials, products and equipment of 50 pounds or more which requires regular bending and lifting.

  • Must have a mechanical aptitude, effective oral and written communication skills, basic math and fundamental computer skills (Microsoft Suite).

  • Must be well-organized, self-motivated, action oriented and able to work effectively in a team environment.

  • Able to operate machinery and computer control systems along with regulatory food safety, safety and environment requirements, e.g., Federal, provincial OH&S, Environmental, CFIA / HACCP preferred.

  • Must have a passion for the agriculture industry, as well as an enthusiasm to contribute to contribute to a larger team and perform as part of an expanding site and global company.
