The Salvation Army Columbia Corps is looking for a Shelter Monitor. This position maintains shelter security, performs clerical duties, handles receptionist duties, and provides general assistance to guests and residents in the shelter.


This is a part-time position, 24 hours per week with a starting pay range between $15.00- $16.00 per hour!  The Salvation Army Columbia Corps is located at 602 N Ann St, Columbia, Missouri. 


Essential Functions

  1. Assure safety of residents in building and on grounds by actively observing the people and happenings in and around the shelter and grounds.
  2. Consistently enforce shelter policies, procedures and guidelines.
  3. Intervene when appropriate to resolve problems between residents.
  4. Complete pre-screening actions to determine intake eligibility of new individuals seeking admission to the emergency shelter and complete intake processing to successfully admit individual.
  5. Add entries of incidents occurring during the shift to the daily shelter log record. Read and sign the previous entries at the beginning of the shift.
  6. Obtain and maintain statistics of attendance at all meetings and screenings held in the shelter.
  7. Update and maintain current daily client list on computer.
  8. Enter client data into the HMIS database when authorized and trained to do so.
  9. Conduct bed checks in appropriate dorms and a security pass-through of the building every hour during shift.
  10. Answer incoming telephone calls and greet visitors entering the building; take and distribute messages as necessary.

Education and Experience 

  • High school/GED Certificate with one year work experience. 
  • Combination of training and work experience will be considered. 
  • Must be a team player, a self-starter, and perform well with minimum supervision. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, initiative and independent judgment and decision-making skills, independent and creative thinking, ability to work with a team. 
  • Must be supportive of The Salvation Army’s mission and policies. 
  • The position requires a high level of confidentiality. 
  • Good communication skills as well as the ability to work with diverse and challenging personalities are essential.
  • Ability to type log entries using Word and update Excel spreadsheets necessary. 
  • Must possess or obtain Adult and Child CPR, First Aid and Blood Borne Pathogens certification within three months of employment. 
  • Complete HMIS training within three months of employment for select shifts.

Physical and Working Conditions

Must be capable of performing the above essential duties in an office environment to include frequently use a computer, answering phones, etc.  Most work will be indoors in a temperature-controlled environment.  The shelter has two levels, and both must be visited during the hourly security checks.  There is an elevator in the building.
