Northrop Grumman Space Systems is seeking to add a Staff TEMPEST Engineer to its Specialty Engineering team located in Huntsville, AL in support of the Sentinel (GBSD) program.

What you will get to do:

This position is for a systems engineer experienced in design for TEMPEST and EMI/EMC compliance. The selected candidate will be expected to lead and support efforts within the Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3) team in the areas of TEMPEST, EMI/EMC design, analysis, and test. 

Specific duties to include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Perform system level decomposition of TEMPEST or EMI/EMC requirements
  • Perform testing in accordance with NSTISSAM TEMPEST/1-92, CNSSAM TEMPEST 01-02
  • Develop TEMPEST or EMI/EMC design requirements at sub-system level.
  • Provide support to the Design review process
  • Perform design analysis to verify compliance
  • Support hardware design engineering to ensure compliance with TEMPEST and EMI/EMC requirements
  • Contribute to the development of the TEMPEST Control Plan
  • Contribute to the development of the Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3) Integration and Analysis Report (E3IAR), E3 Verification Procedures and Reports
  • Develop TEMPEST test plans and test procedures

Technical areas include Space and Launch Vehicles and associated Ground Control Systems. Travel may be required (10%) to witness TEMPEST testing. 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 12 years of related experience with a bachelor’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics discipline; 10 Years with Masters; 8 Years with PhD.
  • US Citizen with an Active Secret security clearance, with the ability to obtain a Top-Secret security clearance and receive a Special Access Program (SAP) certification
  • Must be able to demonstrate experience analyzing high-level needs through a structured and logical approach, refining the need into an integrated set of hardware and software
  • The candidate must have a firm understanding of traditional systems engineering concepts and methodologies and must be able to apply these concepts and methodologies to a complex system of systems
  • A minimum of 7 years ensuring systems and equipment meet NSTISSAM TEMPEST/1-92, CNSSAM TEMPEST 1-13, CNSSAM TEMPEST 01-02 and other TEMPEST requirements
  • A minimum of 7 years conducting TEMPEST testing in accordance with NSTISSAM TEMPEST/1-92 and CNSSAM TEMPEST 01-02
  • A strong understanding of the policies and implementation of policies defined in NSTISSAM TEMPEST/1-92 , CNSSAM TEMPEST 1-13, CNSSAM TEMPEST 01-02, AMSG 720B, AMSG 788A, AMSG 784, BTR:01:210, NATO SDIP-27.
  • Using knowledge of TEMPEST policy, must be able to provide design guidance and recommendations on shielding, filtering, grounding; trace routing, PCB board layer stack-up, cabling, and I/O protections to facilitate compliance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience writhing TEMPEST Control and Test plans and reports or demonstrate the ability to learn
  • Ability to work in a team environment and collaborate across programs and shifts
  • Ability to work independently, communicate clearly, and effectively with employees and customers
  • Prior weapon system experience (GBSD, Minuteman III or similar military or industry experience)
  • Master’s degree in electrical engineering, Physics or Systems Engineering
  • Expert of systems engineering principles and processes
  • Experience with managing/scheduling facilities and equipment
  • Experience in the technical oversight and reporting of E3 programs
  • Experience in showing compliance to TEMPEST or EMI/EMC requirements processes for equipment and sub-systems
  • Experience with equipment, sub-system and system level EMI/EMC test (Expertise in MIL-STD 461, automotive or commercial EMI/EMC testing)
  • Technical ability to develop, document, and maintain tailored TEMPEST or EMI/EMC requirements at equipment, sub-system, and system levels
  • Technical ability to perform TEMPEST or EMI/EMC design and analysis at both system and hardware levels
  • Experience leading TEMPEST or EMI efforts with integrated product teams (IPTs)
  • Experience operating and maintaining NSA certified TEMPEST lab and equipment

This position’s standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.

Primary Level Salary Range: $169,000.00 - $253,600.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
