Senior/Lead Network Engineer
Office of Information Technology
The Senior/Lead Network Engineer works closely with other teams in the Office of Information Technology to plan, design, and implement all network-related services at the University. Networking areas include all wired, wireless, and data center networks as well as internet and cloud connectivity. Related network services include DNS/DHCP, Network Authentication, client and p2p VPN, server load balancing, and management/monitoring tools.
The level of knowledge and experience combined with excellent verbal and written communication skills allows the Senior/Lead Network Engineer to develop project proposals and plans that may include other teams and manage projects with little or no oversight. Communication at varying technical levels is essential.
This position is expected to independently research new technologies, services, and products through a variety of methods including correspondence with peers, vendor meetings, classes, conferences, and online forums. As opportunities are recognized, the Sr. Network Engineer would develop content and present information to the team, management or others to assist in developing a technology roadmap and budget.
The Senior/Lead Network Engineer can be relied on to represent the network team at a variety of levels. They should be comfortable having conversations with subject matter experts, executive management, faculty, staff, and students and respond appropriately to requests or inquiries.
Education & Experience (Grade 10 Senior)

Bachelor’s degree preferred
-
Training/certifications (such as CCNA, CWNA) preferred.

3-4 years experience with wireless and ethernet network troubleshooting.
-
2-3 years experience designing, supporting, and troubleshooting complex wireless networks is highly preferred
-
Some programming or scripting experience using a common language such as Python is preferred
-
Experience working in an authenticated environment using technologies such as 802.1x is preferred
-
Expertise, advanced knowledge and demonstrated experience in the following areas preferred:
-
Advanced routing and switching on enterprise network systems
-
Experience with designing, implementing troubleshooting BGP, OSPF, VRF-Lite and spanning-tree
-
HA network configuration options (like VSS, VPC, SVS, MC-LAG), failover and troubleshooting
-
Wireless network concepts using centralized controllers, encryption methods, authentication and RF planning.

Firewall configuration options and performance tuning
-
Client and p2p VPN concepts and troubleshooting
-
Monitoring protocols such as syslog, SNMP and netflow
-
Packet capturing using tools like Wireshark

Experience with Cisco switching and routing, Aruba wireless networks is preferred
-
Customer-facing technical support role requiring verbal and written communication with customers and using a ticketing system required

Strong project management and organizational skills. Must be able to independently lead cross-functional project teams

Experience with leading small to midsize projects preferred.
