New York, NYWIRED seeks an experienced journalist to cover the researchers, engineers, and executives at the heart of the artificial intelligence industry.
In this role, you’ll be responsible for breaking news consistently about the AI industry. We’re less interested in startup valuations than we are in the people making consequential decisions in this field, whether that’s in the boardroom, the policy shop, or the research department. To succeed in this role, you should be well-versed in the technical aspects of AI, and well-sourced within the most prominent companies.
You should have proven capacity to deliver scoops, exclusives, and stories that can’t be found anywhere else. We’re interested in hard news more than takes, and the ability to put that information into a broader context. A large part of this role is writing an AI-focused newsletter every week; the ideal candidate will understand how to leverage their reporting to attract and retain subscribers, engage audiences, and drive reader loyalty in a competitive news landscape.
In addition to breaking news and regular newsletter sends, there are opportunities to work on long-form feature stories as part of this role as well. You should also be prepared to engage in a wide range of storytelling formats, such as social, podcasts, video series, and live events.
This senior writer will report to WIRED’s Director, Business & Industry, and will be part of a growing and increasingly global newsroom of smart, kind, collaborative, and well-informed colleagues who are always brimming with ideas and eager to help each other out. This role is in-office (4 days/week) and we are open to candidates in San Francisco or New York.
Primary responsibilities:
Break impactful news and deliver scoops on a regular basis
Report and write at least six stories per month, balancing weekly newsletter sends with quick exclusives and longer, differentiated work
Engage and grow a loyal newsletter readership that drives digital subscriptions
Collaborate with other members of your desk, and journalists from across the WIRED newsroom
Collaborate with audio, video, events, and social media teams as needed to develop ways of telling stories on other platforms
Work collaboratively with global markets on all relevant stories or packages
Additional projects/stories as assigned
Requirements:
At least 5 years experience as a tech journalist with a track record of breaking news, driving subscriber growth, and building and reaching a large audience
A proven track record of scoops and the ability to consistently break news on the artificial intelligence beat
Strong organizational skills with demonstrated ability to manage a constantly evolving workload and prioritize appropriately
A clear, engaging, jargon-free writing style
This is a guild position.
The expected base salary range for this position is from $95,000-$135,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
