SUMMARY/JOB PURPOSE:
We are looking for a Senior Staff Engineer, IT Core Services to support the design and creation of products and services to meet the technology needs of Exelixis. This position will work help define and design our hosting service, which includes virtual machine standards, configuration, provisioning, and ongoing operations. This position will also work with application support teams to re-define the interface between the hosting service and application installation and configuration process. This will help us define new products & services that will be used by the hosting services team as well as application support team to help build and deliver hosted applications and services. This position will also plan and implement a shift from on-prem hosting in leased data centers to leveraging AWS services in the delivery of our internal hosting service.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Clearly articulate technical architecture (current and future state diagrams, solution best practices, reference architectures, design patterns) as determined by business requirements and other factors

Leads key technical discussions and considerations around transformative technology from both a technical and non-technical perspective

Collaborate with security teams to incorporate strong security controls, apply security best practices in our code development life cycle

Drive product centricity by focusing on capabilities and value vs. technologies and tasks

Modernize traditional server hosting by adopting cloud services, designing, and evaluating technical architectures for new services and features with stakeholders and leveraging innovative and latest technology developments through new implementation and enhancements to existing ones

Act as the technical product owner for key hosting services, including on-prem and cloud infrastructure and automation
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide technical direction to other individuals.

Mentor junior engineer staff in technical skills development

Manage vendors and contractors to deliver new capabilities and implement new technologies
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
Education:
-
Bachelor’s degree in related discipline and eight years of related experience; or
-
Master’s degree in related discipline and four years of related experience; or
-
PhD degree in related discipline and four years of related experience; or
-
Equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience:
-
Experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS), especially with services related to hosting: EC2, RDS, Systems Manager, IAM, etc.
-
Experience with infrastructure as code (IaC) tools, especially Terraform
-
Experience with virtualization platforms, especially VMWare VCenter & ESX server
-
Experience with Microsoft Active Directory & Windows Server
-
Experience in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries.

Experience in cloud and infrastructure automation
Knowledge/Skills:

Ability to effectively work in cross-functional teams with various backgrounds, personalities, and skill levels

Strong customer-facing, oral, written, and verbal skills to effectively interface with business partners, stakeholders, and technical staff

Ability to define and articulate complex architectures and processes

Ability to work with minimal guidance, to adapt to frequent priority changes, and response to ad-hoc requests

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several U.S. geographic markets, and we pay differently based on those defined markets. The base pay range for this position is $142,000 - $201,000 annually. The base pay range may take into account the candidate’s geographic region, which will adjust the pay depending on the specific work location. The base pay offered will take into account the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, experience and internal equity, among other factors.
In addition to the base salary, as part of our Total Rewards program, Exelixis offers comprehensive employee benefits package, including a 401k plan with generous company contributions, group medical, dental and vision coverage, life and disability insurance, and flexible spending accounts. Employees are also eligible for a discretionary annual bonus program, or if field sales staff, a sales-based incentive plan. Exelixis also offers employees the opportunity to purchase company stock, and receive long-term incentives, 15 accrued vacation days in their first year, 17 paid holidays including a company-wide winter shutdown in December, and up to 10 sick days throughout the calendar year.
