As a Senior Virtualization Engineer, you will design, build, and automate virtualization solutions (primarily Hyper-V) across a large-scale hybrid environment. Working within the standards and reference architectures set by the Virtualization Architect, you will own the design and implementation of specific clusters, automation workflows, and self-healing components — translating platform direction into working, well-engineered infrastructure. This is a hands-on senior engineering role with real design responsibility on scoped problems; it is not an operations role. You will solve hard technical problems and contribute to platform standards, without owning fleet-wide architecture strategy.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement Hyper-V clusters and virtualization solutions against established platform standards, including Failover Clustering, storage, and networking configuration
- Contribute to cluster performance engineering and right-sizing — analyze utilization data, tune configurations, and recommend sizing and consolidation improvements
- Build and maintain infrastructure automation and orchestration using Ansible and Terraform (provisioning, configuration, and lifecycle as code)
- Implement self-healing and auto-remediation components for host, cluster, and VM health, working from patterns defined at the architecture level
- Develop advanced PowerShell automation for provisioning, configuration, reporting, and remediation
- Build and maintain virtualization host templates and standardized build pipelines
- Support hybrid-cloud integration work (Azure preferred), including connectivity and workload placement between on-prem and cloud
- Establish and maintain performance baselines, monitoring, and observability for cluster health, capacity, and utilization
- Perform advanced troubleshooting and root-cause analysis on virtualization, cluster, and performance issues across the fleet
- Contribute to reference architectures, design documentation, and standards; provide technical guidance to junior engineers
Required Skills & Experience
- Strong hands-on experience designing and implementing enterprise virtualization, with primary strength in Hyper-V and Failover Clustering (VMware vSphere a plus)
- Practical experience with cluster performance tuning, capacity planning, and right-sizing in large environments
- Solid automation and orchestration skills: Terraform and Ansible for infrastructure-as-code and configuration management
- Experience implementing or supporting self-healing / auto-remediation for infrastructure health
- Advanced PowerShell scripting for automation, reporting, and remediation
- Working knowledge of the underlying stack: compute, storage (SAN/NAS/S2D/vSAN), and networking as they relate to virtualization performance
- Exposure to hybrid-cloud / public cloud (Azure preferred; AWS/GCP relevant)
- Understanding of HA/DR, live migration, and workload mobility
General Skills & Competencies
- Self-directed engineer who can take a scoped design problem and drive it to implementation with limited oversight
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting mindset; grounds decisions in performance and utilization data
- Clear written and verbal communication; able to document designs and explain technical trade-offs to peers and leadership
- Collaborative contributor who mentors junior engineers and shares knowledge
- Keeps current with virtualization, automation, and cloud technologies
Experience Required
- 6+ years in infrastructure or virtualization engineering, including hands-on design and implementation of Hyper-V (or comparable) at scale, plus automation with Ansible/Terraform
Certifications Preferred
- Microsoft Certified: Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate (AZ-800/AZ-801)
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104)
- HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate
- Red Hat Certified Specialist in Ansible Automation
- VMware VCP-DCV (if VMware is in scope)
