Purpose of the Position:
Help determine the daily video news agenda for the South China Morning Post’s award-winning video team and tell stories from Hong Kong, China and around the world. This role will help shape the South China Morning Post's video offering for years to come. Short form, long form, explainers, interviews and everything in between.In this role, you will:
- Lead a news shift, managing a team of associate producers to make videos covering the top stories, with a focus on news from Hong Kong, China and Asia, and major breaking news from elsewhere in the world
- Comb through the news and social media to identify stories and elements for news video that is of interest to our key audiences
- Assign stories to associate producers, giving them a clear focus and elements
- Edit their scripts for accuracy, story flow, grammar and adherence to house style
- Review and approve their video before publishing
- Provide leadership and mentoring to associate producers and video producers
- Pitch ideas for original video stories and also help refine the pitches of other producers
- Some opportunities for field work to produce, shoot and edit, and host original Video stories
- Deputise for more senior roles as needed
- This position requires shift work from early morning to mid afternoon or mid afternoon to late evening
Skills and Experience that will lead to success:
- Must be passionate about video journalism and embrace the latest storytelling techniques
- Native English speaker or equivalent, Cantonese and Mandarin preferred
- At least 3 years of video production experience working in a daily news environment and turning breaking news quickly, on-camera experience is a plus
- Work well under pressure while overseeing multiple stories during a shift
- Extensive writing experience of video scripts and copy editing for video
- Prior experience in leading video projects, delivering feedback and amending the projects of others
- A training or mentoring background in a news environment
- Must be able to work as part of a team in a leadership role
- Must be comfortable on the Adobe suite of software with specific expertise in Premiere Pro
- Experience shooting on DSLR and large sensor cameras like the FX3, FX30 and FX6
- Must have experience working in the field, conducting interviews, arranging shoots and thinking on your feet
Work location will be at Hong Kong office.
