Job Description

 

 

Times Opinion is hiring a video journalist with a specialization in cinematography to film The Ezra Klein Show. 

This is a production heavy position that will be responsible for shooting, lighting and managing the technical aspects of filming The Ezra Klein Show at our headquarters in New York City as well as on remote locations. 

The ideal candidate for this position should have a refined understanding of lighting techniques in multi-camera environments with a meticulous attention to detail. You will have an in-depth knowledge of camera systems and sensor science. 

In post-production, this video journalist will assist the Ezra Klein Show Video Editor in editing, including media management, ingesting, organizing footage, color management, clip creation and multicam sync. While your primary job is shooting, this position should have strong knowledge of Adobe and/or DaVinci Resolve workflows and be fluent editing skills to assist the video editor.

In this role, you’ll work day-to-day under the Deputy Director of Opinion Video and the Supervising Editor of the Ezra Klein Show to ensure flawless and consistent productions. You will report to the Deputy Director of Opinion Video.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage video production of the Ezra Klein Show.

  • Take the lead in planning shoots for all episodes, including camera, lensing and lighting equipment and media asset management.

  • Lead cinematography and guard aesthetic standards of the Ezra Klein Show. 

  • Oversee and supervise second camera operators and producers to assist on shoots.

  • Work with the Ezra Klein Show producers to ensure shooting locations will create perfect video.

  • Work with the Ezra Klein Show Video Editor to ensure fast and efficient workflow from production to post production. 

  • Work with the Ezra Klein Show audio engineers to ensure perfect audio capture for multi platform rollout.

  • Produce a top-notch product independently while also guiding more junior staff members.

  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

  • Perform related work as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of cinematography and/or video journalism experience

  • The ability to edit quickly with Adobe Premiere Pro

  • Familiarity with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and After Effects

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Must be able to shoot excellent video in new and complex situations

  • Must have a proven track record of solid editorial judgment that aligns with the ethics of The Times newsroom

  • Must be comfortable working on tight, demanding deadlines and in high-stress breaking news situations, and can juggle multiple projects at any given time

  • Must be highly organized with the ability to manage complex schedules

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $122,529.36 and $130,000.00.
