aberdeen comprises three businesses, interactive investor (ii), Investments and Adviser, each of which focuses on meeting and adapting to our clients’ evolving needs:

  • interactive investor, the UK’s second largest direct-to-consumer investment platform, enables individuals in the UK to plan, save and invest in the way that works for them.

  • Our Adviser business provides financial planning solutions and technology for UK financial advisers, enabling them to create value for their customers.

  • Our Investments business is a specialist asset manager that focuses on areas where we have both strength and scale to capitalise on the key themes shaping the market, through either public markets or alternative asset classes.

About the Department

Global Macro Research is Aberdeen’s economic and political-risk research team, undertaking macro research and analysis to drive better investment outcomes. We produce economic forecasts, specify alternative scenarios, use a range of econometric tools, and undertake political risk analysis. This is communicated by research notes, webinars, podcasts, and a wide variety of internal investor and client interactions. The team has experience across central banking, ratings agencies, investment banking, portfolio management, and consultancy. We are a trusted economic research partner to portfolio managers, risk managers, the broader corporate entity, and our clients. Our research is integrated into investment processes, portfolio decision making, risk management, and corporate planning.

About the Role

We are seeking a senior economist to lead our research, analysis, forecasting, and scenario analysis of the US economy. The successful candidate will play a key role in forming wider global economic views alongside other senior economists and the Chief Economist.

Key Responsibilities

  • Economic Forecasting: Forecast growth, inflation, and monetary policy for the US economy, specifying a base case and alternative scenarios. Develop quantitative tools to support the forecasting process.

  • Economic Analysis and Communication: Shape, own, and clearly articulate views on the evolving US economic data flow and key macro and market themes driving financial markets.

  • Research and Publications: Write and contribute to regular publications, including daily updates, webinars, podcasts, thematic insight notes, forecasts, and deep dive research.

  • Collaboration with Stakeholders: Collaborate with the senior political economist on analysis of the US political outlook and engage with internal investor colleagues to input US economic views into investment processes.

  • Client Engagement: Regularly present to clients and the media on the US and global economic outlook. Establish and nurture relationships with internal distribution teams and strategic clients.

  • US Presence: Regularly visit the firm’s US offices, anticipated to be at least two week-long visits per year, depending on client demand.

  • Mentorship: Develop and mentor junior colleagues, overseeing their analysis and editing their writing.

  • Regulatory Awareness: Understand the regulatory framework in which the company operates, acting with honesty and integrity and observing proper standards of market conduct.

About the Candidate

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Significant Economics Experience: Experience in an economics or financial market's role, including regular use of economic data for forecasts, research, and analysis.

  • US Economic Knowledge: Strong knowledge and understanding of the key drivers of the US economy.

  • Communication Skills: Ability to communicate complex economic ideas effectively to a broad range of audiences, with experience delivering presentations to clients.

  • Written Communication: Excellent written communication skills, evidenced through regular analytical report writing.

  • Quantitative Skills: Excellent quantitative skills, including experience with statistical tools and methods.

  • Teamwork and Relationships: Track record as a strong team player, able to build effective relationships across international teams.

  • Regulatory Awareness: Understanding of the regulatory framework and adherence to relevant rules and regulations.

  • Qualifications: At least an undergraduate degree in economics or a closely related subject; a post-graduate degree or qualification is advantageous.
