Provide specialist anatomy technical support for safe, compliant teaching, research and management of cadaveric materials.

The Opportunity
Western Sydney University is seeking a Senior Technical Support Officer – Anatomy to provide specialist technical support for anatomy teaching and research within Teaching & Research Technical Services.

The Senior Technical Support Officer will prepare practical teaching spaces, materials and equipment for anatomy and physiology classes, and provide technical instruction and safety guidance to staff and students during classes. The role will also support research activities through technical advice, training in the use of specialised equipment, procurement, data collection and coordination of equipment servicing. Additional responsibilities include maintaining Standard Operating Procedures, participating in audits and stocktakes, and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives across the Medical and Allied Health team.

The position will support the safe, respectful and compliant operation of the University’s anatomy facilities and Body Donor Program. Responsibilities include anatomical embalming, dissection and prosection, preparation of high-quality teaching specimens, ongoing specimen maintenance and coordination of future specimen requirements. The role will maintain accurate records, conduct specimen audits and ensure human cadaveric materials are handled, stored and disposed of in accordance with relevant legislation, Australian Standards, and University requirements.

The Senior Technical Support Officer will promote safe work practices across teaching and research facilities by completing risk assessments, conducting laboratory safety inductions and maintaining current safety documentation and chemical inventories. The role will oversee the safe receipt, handling, storage and disposal of chemical and biological materials, maintain Safety Data Sheets and chemical inventories, and implement corrective actions arising from safety and compliance audits.

What Success Looks Like:
Success in this position will be demonstrated through the delivery of safe, reliable and compliant technical services that enable high-quality anatomy teaching and research. This will be evident when:

• Anatomy teaching spaces, specimens, materials and equipment are accurately prepared and ready for scheduled practical classes.
• Cadaveric materials are skilfully dissected, embalmed and maintained, with all handling, recording, storage and disposal completed safely, respectfully and in accordance with legislative requirements.
• Anatomy facilities maintain accurate and complete records, meet operational and compliance requirements, and remain prepared for internal and external audits.
• Staff, students and researchers receive clear and practical technical instruction on specialised equipment, laboratory procedures and safe work practices.
• Standard Operating Procedures, risk assessments, chemical inventories and safety records remain current, accurate and consistently applied across teaching and research activities.

About You
The successful candidate will bring specialist anatomy expertise, sound technical judgement and a demonstrated commitment to safe, respectful and compliant practice. They will have:

• An undergraduate degree in Anatomy or Mortuary Science, or an equivalent combination of relevant education, training and experience.
• Extensive experience providing technical support for anatomy teaching and research, including preparing specialised facilities and working with human cadaveric materials.
• Demonstrated knowledge and expertise of human anatomy, cadaver dissection, prosection and embalming.
• Demonstrated knowledge and practical experience in embalming human cadaveric specimens, including solution preparation, identification, record keeping, storage and ongoing specimen maintenance.
• Sound working knowledge of the Anatomy Act 1977 (NSW) and other legislation, standards and procedures relevant to human cadaveric materials.
• Experience supporting laboratory safety, including risk assessments, safety inductions, chemical records, safe materials handling and responses to audit findings.
• Strong organisational and communication skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.

Special Requirements: Due to the nature of this role, successful candidates are required to be vaccinated against Hepatitis B, or be willing to obtain the vaccination prior to commencing employment.
