Projects are more stand-alone than programs; program management is typically the orchestration of several related projects. At entry level individual contributor roles, the primary focus will be project management. As one advances through the career path, their focus may be project or program focused, depending on business need Generally work is self-directed and not prescribed.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Enterprise Program Strategy & Delivery
- Define and execute program strategies aligned to business and technology objectives
- Lead multiple complex projects or enterprise programs with broad organizational impact
- Tailor methodologies across Agile, Waterfall, and hybrid approaches to optimize outcomes
- Establish delivery, business, and financial metrics to measure value realization
- Executive & Enterprise Leadership
- Partner with executives and senior leaders to shape priorities, sequencing, and delivery decisions
- Communicate with executive presence, anticipating needs and presenting actionable options
- Influence across a broad enterprise matrix to remove obstacles and drive alignment
- Represent the program function in senior-level and enterprise governance forums
- Risk, Change & Financial Stewardship
- Anticipate complex, systemic risks and drive enterprise-level mitigation strategies
- Lead change planning and transition activities across business and technology teams
- Own financial accountability for large investments, including forecasts, trade-offs, and corrective actions
- Optimize allocation of capital and resources across competing priorities
- Customer & Business Impact
- Focus beyond day-to-day delivery to long-term business outcomes and value
- Strengthen customer and stakeholder confidence through consistent, high-quality execution
- Embed customer-centric thinking into delivery culture and decision-making
- Coaching & Capability Building
- Mentor and coach program managers and senior project leaders
- Set standards for excellence in delivery, risk management, and financial discipline
- Contribute to organizational capability development and best practices
