PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The Senior Systems Engineer is a pivotal role at the Institute for Research on Equity and Community Health providing expertise and leadership in designing, building and optimizing systems for data collection, storge access and analytics. The Senior Systems Engineer will provide oversight of department data systems and projects and will work closely with cross-functional teams, including biostatisticians, clinical researchers, program managers, IT application analysts, and other healthcare professionals.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works closely with iREACH Director of Clinical Research to determine resources, technical skills, feasibility, and scope of data analytics needed for research projects.
  • Works closely with iREACH Corporate Director to align technology solutions with department and organizational goals, becoming familiar with existing resources and infrastructure.
  • Primary liaison with Information Services in regard to network and department applications, department servers and equipment.
  • Investigates external data sources and works with external and internal partners to define the methods for matching data.
  • Develops standardized procedures to be used by the data team to address issues found in the exploratory data analysis.
  • Builds and maintains optimal data structures and efficient processes ensuring that data is readily available for analysis and decision-making.
  • Prepare datasets for advanced analytics, such as machine learning, natural language processing, other innovative methods.
  • Investigate trends and new technologies in the data space.
  • Maintains and enhances local data marts.
  • Works with data source system owners on data quality issues.
  • Performs analytic dataset validation to ensure data correctness against source systems, using independent queries and match to the data extraction plan.
  • Adheres to institutional and regulatory data compliance requirements, supports investigators with data management plan.
  • Mentors and develops others.
  • Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices; report to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Systems Engineering, Computer Sciences, Data Science, Health Care Informatics, or related quantitative discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of medical terms including diagnoses, procedures, medications, and labs is required.
  • Experience with healthcare data, EMR, and research highly desirable.
  • Project Management training and experience, preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Excellent SQL knowledge and programing skills required, including experience building complex standardized functions.
  • Excellent knowledge of Python, and other programming languages including R, JAVA.
  • Experience with PySpark and Snowflake, highly desired.
  • Strong Microsoft Office package skills
  • Ability to manage complex research projects and lead technical team.
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex data insights to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to handle changing workflows, while paying close attention to detail.
