Job Summary
The AIX L3 System Administrator is responsible for expert‑level administration, engineering, and support of IBM AIX and pSeries environments. This role acts as the highest technical escalation point, owning complex troubleshooting, performance tuning, migrations, virtualization, and lifecycle management while ensuring system stability, security, and availability in mission‑critical environments.
Key Responsibilities
AIX & pSeries Administration
Install, configure, administer, and maintain IBM AIX servers in enterprise environments
Perform AIX OS administration, kernel management, and LVM management
Manage user administration, security policies, password, and identity management
Administer system services such as NIS, NFS, Samba, and printer services
Virtualization & Power Platform
Strong expertise in PowerVM / VIOS, HMC, and AIX virtualization
Build and administer VIOS servers
Manage HMC administration and upgrades (Version 9 & 10)
Deep knowledge of Power8, Power9, and Power10/11 pSeries architectures
Expert understanding of:
DLPAR
LPM (Live Partition Mobility)
Virtual networking
Virtual storage
SR‑IOV, vNIC adapters
Hands‑on experience with NPIV and SAN‑attached storage
Build, Migration & Lifecycle Management
Perform AIX server build and configuration using best practices
Manage NIM (Network Installation Manager) for OS deployment and maintenance
Execute OS patching, upgrades, and VIOS upgrades
Lead and execute AIX OS migrations: 6.1, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3.
Perform hardware refresh, storage migration, and platform migrations
Experience in pSeries hardware commissioning and implementation
Performance, HA & DR
Analyze resource utilization and system performance
Perform performance tuning and capacity planning
Strong experience in storage management, SAN environments, and HA concepts
Design and support Fault Tolerant systems, Business Continuity, and Disaster Recovery planning
Incident, RCA & Operations
Act as final escalation point for complex AIX and hardware‑related issues
Strong in hardware and OS‑level troubleshooting
Lead Major Incident troubleshooting and RCA
Perform trend analysis, identify recurring issues, and drive corrective actions
Coordinate with hardware vendors for issue resolution
Plan, schedule, and execute changes; coordinate with cross‑functional stakeholders
Prepare weekly and monthly operational status reports
Adhere to ITIL processes, quality, and security standards
Automation & Documentation
Develop Shell / Perl scripts to automate day‑to‑day administration tasks
Maintain and update technical documentation, SOPs, and knowledge base
Support continuous knowledge acquisition and documentation updates
Leadership & Collaboration
Provide technical SME support across projects and operations
Work closely with application, database, storage, network, and cloud teams
Communicate effectively with interdisciplinary technical and non‑technical teams
Work in rotational shifts and on‑call support models
Required Skills & Experience
8–12+ years of hands‑on experience in IBM AIX and pSeries administration
Deep understanding of IBM AIX OS and Power Systems architecture
Strong experience with PowerVM, VIOS, HMC
Excellent troubleshooting skills for OS and hardware issues
Strong scripting skills (Shell, Perl)
Experience in enterprise production environments
Preferred Qualifications
IBM Certifications in:
AIX System Administration
pSeries Hardware
Performance Tuning
Network Administration
Experience in large, mission‑critical environments
Exposure to hybrid or cloud‑integrated IBM Power workloads
Professional Attributes
