About Skylight

Skylight is a digital consultancy using design and technology to help government agencies deliver better public services.

We’re at the forefront of a civic movement to reinvent how all levels of government serve families, patients, and many others in today's digital world.

If you want to play a part in driving this critical movement forward, we’d love for you to join our growing team of public interest technologists.

The work we do matters.

About the job

At Skylight, DevOps engineers work with developers throughout the software development life cycle to ensure code can be reliably and repeatedly released on demand with a high degree of quality. They understand both software development and operations, with expertise in areas such as networking, security, test automation, and continuous integration/deployment.

You'll join a contract supporting a federal agency in the health and civilian space. The systems involved handle sensitive personal data that millions of people rely on, so getting them right means treating that data with care while keeping the experience clear and humane. As a DevOps engineer on this team, you'll build and maintain the infrastructure, pipelines, and security controls that let the team deliver continuously while meeting the strict compliance and data-protection requirements that come with sensitive federal systems.

What you’ll do
  • Engineer a great experience for developers working in web-based environments through automation, virtualization, and process improvement
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines that let the team reliably and repeatedly release to production on demand
  • Manage cloud infrastructure and create and maintain infrastructure as code, standardizing deployment processes
  • Protect sensitive data by applying security and privacy best practices, conducting audits and risk analyses, and planning and implementing remediations that meet federal security standards
  • Achieve technical excellence by advocating for and adhering to lean-agile engineering practices such as simple design and automated testing
  • Build up the organization’s engineering capacity through coaching, knowledge sharing, and other enablement practices
What we're looking forMinimum qualifications
  • Understand the general concepts of modern software development and can work closely with software engineers
  • Able to work in a cloud-centric world, including managing disparate, interconnected systems and ensuring their availability, reliability, and resiliency
  • Can enable teams to deliver value to users and the business continuously (e.g., CI/CD pipelines)
  • Know how to build secure, compliant applications and defend against common vulnerabilities
  • Can work with software engineers to instrument applications and configure infrastructure for monitoring, metrics, alerting, logging, auditability, and compliance
  • Know how to create and maintain infrastructure as code and standardize deployment processes
  • Experience mentoring engineers and raising the operational bar across a team or product (staff level)
  • Ability to work successfully within a professional services environment (e.g., can communicate effectively with clients)
  • Passionate about creating better public outcomes through great government services
  • A mindset and work approach that aligns with our core values
  • Ability to travel for work from time to time
Nice-to-have qualifications
  • Experience working in regulated or compliance-driven environments (e.g., FedRAMP, FISMA)
  • Experience with AWS GovCloud or other government cloud environments
  • Experience supporting systems that handle sensitive personal data (e.g., tax, financial, or benefits information)
  • Prior experience working in the civic tech space
  • Experience working in a remote-team environment

Don’t meet every qualification but think you can do the job? We’d still love to hear from you. If you’re excited about the role, apply. We consider candidates with a range of backgrounds and experiences.

Other requirements
  • All work must be conducted within the U.S., excluding U.S. territories. Some federal contracts require U.S. citizenship to be eligible for employment.
  • You must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. now and in the future without sponsorship.
  • As a government contractor, you may be required to obtain a public trust or security clearance.
  • You may be required to complete a company background check successfully.
  • Some of our available roles are on federal contracts that require a degree or additional years of experience as a substitute.
